I was originally going to title this "Farewell."

The original lineart for this was drawn back in August of 2009. These are my characters from my webcomic Starlit Wings. Recently I have decided to restart and retool the comic because I was not satisfied with how I had told the story so far. I was also very dissatisfied with my art style and was going to redesign the characters in a more Western style; at the time a combination of factors had made me hate my own art and believe I was unsuccessful as an artist because I drew anime-style. I made a few concept sketches of the characters' new designs and was happy with them. Then I saw this lineart among some old art on my computer and decided to finish it and that it would be my "farewell" to my anime style that I have used for years. As I worked on this and came closer and closer to finishing, I compared it to the redesigns. To me, they were not the same characters. If I drew the redesigns in the new comic, they would not be these characters. Then I remembered why I had started drawing comics in the first place: I drew them for myself.
While it was nice to have readers that enjoyed my stories, I originally started drawing comics because it was a part of my life that I had complete control over; nobody could tell me how to do it and I could do whatever I wanted. However at the same time I wanted to improve my art, but soon I was trying to cater to a new audience and not trying to improve for the sake of improvement; I cared too much about what other people thought about my art.
I'm still going to retool the story of Starlit Wings, but I will still use the original character designs. However, I will not stop trying to improve. I even plan on still using a more Western style in the future--just not on the characters I have already created and are dear to me. Say hello to Nomi, Mitsuru, Hiro, and Kazuki; they're here to stay.

Anyway, this is the happiest I have been with a drawing for a while. I feel I'm improving at digital painting, I'm not very experienced with it since I have done mostly cel-shading for many years. I'm most happy with how Kazuki's shirt and Nomi's hair came out. It was interesting to see the improvement in the lineart, too. I drew over the ink lineart I scanned in 09 in SAI with the pen tool. The clothing was much plainer in the original, I've added more folds and wrinkles.

I guess I was subconciously influenced by the mugshot clips from the Code Geass opening; I hadn't planned on them looking similar. I haven't watched that show since it ended. XD [link]
