Hero Dog!

Heh... Shibas can manage to look like heroes even if they're not doing anything particularly heroic, and this one is really good at it

Nice one, good shot of the beach too. The water looks cold though, maybe that's why the Shiba thinks it's being a hero ... after all, they don't like water even at the best of times.

Whoa, that is strange... my Shiba can't stand water at all, not even the rain. His little sister likes running through sprinklers and through the rain (but also can't stand getting wet to the skin).

I didn't know that there were _any_ Shibas who didn't mind getting their undercoat wet! Surprising...

Are you sure it's a Shiba and not an alien impostor?

that's what I expected from a Shiba, but I've read some articles about shark hunting Shibas (Australia as far as I remember) or about a Shiba who goes rafting with its master (in Japan)

I'm curious how mine will be. Just have to wait for some months, it's in "preparation"

Well, of course the shark hunting one would come from Australia... Aussies are all mad, even if they're Shibas

Also, glad to hear you will get a Shiba! It may drive you up the walls initially but with a kind and firm hand they can be trained well, since they're really clever

I grew up with dogs, but with Westies. I guess a Shiba is much more active and I really can't stand it now. My neigbourgh here in Tokyo has a Shiba. Everyone here has Shibas. XD
First I wanted to have an Akita (the Japanese one), but it's too large, Shiba is perfect I guess *g*

Not to mention the fact that they shed less fur

haha *g* the breeder of akitas said that they shed nowadays 4 times instead just 2 times a year - because of the clima change! O_o;

I heard a similar story

Don't know how true it is though ^^

I'll watch how often my shiba will shed, maybe they are different because of the fur?

Well, IIRC Shibas have relatively diverse coat textures and don't all shed the same. It may have something to do with the fact that there were various sub-types of Shibas before WWII, but afterwards there were fewer purebreeds left, so the Shibas from different Prefectures were inter-bred in order to preserve the breed itself. Which means that Shibas suffer from much less inbreeding than most other (especially Western) breeds.

the inbreeding is also nowadays in Europe... luckily, I get a real "Japan import" XD As the parents of my dog are from Tokyo.
I'm happy that the Japanese protected it this way. I can't imagine that it's still the same since 8000 years

Isn't the Shiba a national monument, I remember reading something to that effect?

I know it 100% about the Akita Inu, but I'm not sure about Shiba. Akita is since 1933 I guess

Oh, OK. Can't find a reference to Shiba-as-a-national-monument at this time, so I may have misremembered.

it's written in my (japanese) shiba-keeping book: shiba became a natural monument in showa 11 (1936)

Shiba-keeping... that sounds almost like Koi-keeping... I just had this sudden mental image of a Shiba in an aquarium...

OK, so my dog is a national monument. I guess that means I can put a bronze plaque on his head, right?

yeah, I completely agree with you. But! The water thing isn't that true!

When I came back to Kamakura with a friend and saw a Shiba at the beach, I wanted to tell her that they don't like water. And what does the Shiba to prove my words? Yeah... it jumps into the sea and swims away XD Okay, fortunately it came back, but it jumped again and again into the sea. XD Really bad timing...^^°
