I like reader inserts because they remind me of the "choose-your-own-adventure" books of my youth, or "Mad-Libs"- except it's only the author's call.

When I first encountered reader inserts, I was astonished at the qaulity of the writing, and authors work, so now I simply classify it as a different type of style/genre.

Reader-inserts can actually be pretty good and can work. It can either be the reader going on an awesome adventure or falling in love. Most of the times I see myself as a character anyway. The second type can also be good if you want to have a bit of a romantic read.
