I had to disagree. The reader is often portrayed as some shallowΒ mary sue . I've read some myself and the person the reader is paired with someoneΒ is often OOC (especially if they are already in a relationship with someone or doesn't care for/need a love interest). Also, they all aren't well written and makes me felt like reading some typical shoujo manga without pictures. However, if you like self-inserts, I'll dislike you, but I'll let you like self-inserts. Besides, whenever I read one, to make myself feel better, I imagine it as a real book and set it on fire.
