As you may have guessed, this is my interpretation of Sunset Shimmer and Spitfire's parents. I said that Sunset and Spitfire were twins with the latter being the firstborn in my headcanon, so here's the story behind that. Stormy Flare's family line is pure pegasus. Her husband, Dawn Typhoon, is the son of a pegasus and a unicorn. So when Spitfire and Sunset were born, they were only a little shocked that the latter turned out to be a unicorn. Dawn's dad was one himself, so Sunset obviously got her horn from him. The original plan was for the two to raise their foals in Cloudsdale. Because of Sunset, they grew up in Canterlot instead. While the family fell apart after Sunset ran away to the human world due to both parents blaming themselves and each other for their younger daughter's disappearance, neither one was at fault for it. I'll get into that with Sunset and Spitfire's story.

For the most part, they ignored the fact that Spitfire and Sunset's rivalry was driving the two mares to hate each other because the rivalry itself drove them to achieve more than the average pony. They were equally proud of both daughters. However, because they ignored the damage their rivalry was causing to their relationship, they failed to see Spitfire and Sunset's falling out coming. For Spitfire's sake, they froze out Sunset. Not that Sunset didn't already cut them out of her life after becoming Princess Celestia's personal student. When Sunset left, Flare and Dawn were quick to turn on each other. Flare blamed Dawn for encouraging the rivalry while Dawn chewed Flare out for never comforting Sunset whenever she felt left out. They ultimately agreed that they were both at fault (which isn't true since we all know Sunset left Equestria due to her ambitions). However, it didn't save their marriage. Shortly after Spitfire became a Wonderbolt, Flare and Dawn decided to split up. Dawn moved to Cloudsdale as a show of support to Spitfire while Flare remained in Canterlot in hopes that Sunset would one day return.

While Sunset did eventually return to Equestria, the family's broken ties weren't truly repaired until Sunset's first foal was born.

The concept itself was inspired by this Sunset Shimmer fanfic: Firebird Dahlia . It's a very good story and I highly recommend it.

The only character that belongs to me is Dawn Typhoon. Stormy Flare belongs to Hasbro.
