Description
The story behind these two doesn't have a happy beginning, but it does have a happy ending. While they were born together, Spitfire was born first. The few minutes before Sunset was born had the family thinking that both fillies would be pegasi. To their surprise (and disappointment to a much lesser extent), Sunset was a unicorn. Because she was born without wings, Sunset found herself competing with Spitfire for the attention of their parents. At the very beginning, Sunset couldn't compete because she was the black sheep. The rivalry got even more heated when Spitfire earned her cutie mark while Sunset remained a blank flank. It made the unicorn filly even more determined to outshine Spitfire and prove she was the alpha twin.Through her efforts to prove herself the superior sister, it became apparent that Sunset was much smarter and had more raw magical ability than most unicorns in her age group. It's for those reasons she was admitted to Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. While she did love school, a majority of the student body was raised by tribalist families. As a result, Sunset was viciously bullied for being born into a family of pegasi. Eventually, Sunset decided to stand up for herself. She picked a fight with one of the bullies and won. The student suffered severe injury, but he and everypony else stopped messing with Sunset. The fact that she used advanced magic to win the fight was what caused her cutie mark to appear. Even more so, she caught the attention of Princess Celestia. Impressed with what Sunset was capable of, the alicorn decided to make the young filly her personal student. All of a sudden, Spitfire couldn't compare to the unicorn prodigy that was her sister. Their parents more or less failed to see the growing hatred between them because the rivalry it spawned drove the two young mares to achieve far more than the average pony their age. Had they bothered to see the signs, they would've seen the falling out coming.
Shortly before Sunset left Equestria for the human world, Spitfire went to her for help. She got a shot to join the Wonderbolts and needed her sister's magic for the routine she wanted to use. This led to a heated argument between the mares. Sunset stated that she wouldn't waste her time and magic on something so foolish in her opinion. After Spitfire called Sunset a dodo (she was raised by pegasi, so it makes sense she'd start seeing red after being called a flightless bird), it turned into a vicious hoof fight that ended with Spitfire breaking Sunset's horn. Sunset responded to that insult by bucking Spitfire when her back was turned, hitting her hard enough in the right spot to break her wings. While Sunset's horn would grow back and her magic wouldn't be effected by the fact that it was broken off in the first place, Spitfire found out that, while she'd still be able to fly, she wouldn't ever be as fast as she once was. As far as she could tell at the time, her little sister had destroyed her dream of being a Wonderbolt. While her parents knew better and tried to convince their eldest child of that, Spitfire firmly believed that Sunset broke her wings on purpose (which isn't true since Sunset was never that heartless when she was her old self) and told them that she wanted nothing more to do with the "horned freak" she shared blood with. After that, Sunset's name wasn't ever mentioned in Spitfire's presense until Princess Celestia told the family she had gone on a journey of self-discovery without leaving so much as a clue to where she might have gone or when she'd return to Equestria. She just vanished. The family fell apart after that. Their parents, Stormy Flare and Dawn Typhoon, finally realized that Sunset and Spitfire's rivalry gave rise to the animosity between them. Flare and Dawn were at each other's throats most of the time before they finally agreed that they were equally to blame. Eventually, their happy marriage ended. Flare stayed in Canterlot to await Sunset's return while Dawn moved to Cloudsdale. Spitfire took Sunset's sudden departure in a much better way, but it still had a deep impact on her. While she was happy that she had more or less won the rivalry, she still cried over her sister disappearing without a trace. The fact that they hated each other had briefly become irrelevant before Spitfire reminded herself that Sunset had made achieving her dream more difficult if not impossible. Without the rivalry to focus on, the fiery pegasus mare devoted herself to trying to get into the Wonderbolts. Despite being a bit slower, she was still a very fast flyer and was inducted into the group with no problems.
We all know what happened after that: Sunset became the social tyrant of Canterlot High, Spitfire eventually became Captain of the Wonderbolts, and the events of the Equestria Girls films took place. After finishing high school, Sunset decided to return to Equestria. It was time to face those she wronged. Besides, she received word that her human counterpart was going to attend college in the city. She had to leave since there couldn't be two Sunset Shimmers living in the same place. She, of course, befriended the pony counterparts of her Canterlot High friends and their support made it easier for her to face her parents and Princess Celestia. However, it was never them Sunset truly feared. She knew Spitfire outright hated her and she didn't blame her for it. Needless to say, Spitfire refused to believe that Sunset had changed for the better and even went as far as to attack her (Sunset didn't fight back because she felt Spitfire's actions were justified). It wasn't until Rainbow Dash pointed out that the senseless fight with Sunset actually made Spitfire a better flyer that the fiery mare decided to give her sister a fair chance. They do make up after Sunset tells Spitfire why she left Equestria and why she wanted to be an alicorn princess so badly: she was sick of being a dodo and wanted to feel like she belonged in her own family for once. However, she lost sight of her goal when Princess Celestia showed her the mirror. Once she saw how powerful she could be as an alicorn, Sunset stopped caring about fitting in with her pegasus family and put all her efforts into finding a way to ascend purely for the power. It was this decision that turned Sunset into the cruel and ambitious mare she used to be before Princess Twilight Sparkle and the human Harmony Bearers taught her friendship. Spitfire mentioned that their rivalry probably didn't make things any easier for Sunset growing up. At that point, they agreed to start over. In a few years time, they became the loving sisters to each other they should've been from the start.
The concept of Sunset and Spitfire being sisters was inspired by this fanfic: Firebird Dahlia . Them being twins was my own original idea.
Just to clarify, I used the hair colors from Friendship Games in Sunset's mane and tail.
I should also state that this headcanon only applies to my Next Gen ponies. I have a different idea in mind for Sunset Shimmer and Spitfire's family lines in the Duskverse.
I'm also aware that the canon lore states that a unicorn's horn won't grow back if it's ever broken, but my explanation behind that is that it will grow back if it's broken when the unicorn is an adult as their magic is more developed and stabilized. Tempest Shadow was a filly when her horn broke, so she was never able to attain the magical stability she needed for it to grow back. Sunset was an adult when Spitfire broke her horn. Her magic was able to stabilize as she developed it since she had a horn to properly channel it, so her horn grew back.
I don't own Spitfire or Sunset Shimmer. They belong to Hasbro.
