I'm glad you are hesitant towards owning a bird. They are such a huge huge huge responsibility, and I think they are probably the most neglected pet in the world. A lot of people don't have time to play with them for at least 3-5 hours a day 
Plus, I definitely understand the point you made. Birds really should be out there flying.
