Laphi is a Precious Cinnamon Roll who deserves a Headpat

But I really liked both games so far despite Zestiria's ending kinda messed me up with Sorey and the others standing over that grave

But the best part was the fight with Jade and Sophie

I'd love a Tales of the Abyss Remaster on PS4 so much

Still hate Anise for getting Ion killed

A very well deserved head pat.

Ah man, the ending. The main menu screen change after the ending too.

The EX dungeon was great. Mikleo's commentary in the enemy battles was hilarious. And after Jade with the whole, "Maybe it's because he wears glasses?" thing.

That was horrible. Playing Abyss was so painful in so many ways. It was my first Tales game, actually. I would always be up for a console remaster. Especially if they voiced the darn skits.

Aw, this is such a sweet picture. I really wish these two could have met in their respective games; it would have just been awesome. Also, I think Sorey would have been an awesome big brother type figure to Laphicet.

And I am not ashamed to say this: I love Zesteria despite all of its faults. I think it is a good game and stand by it no matter what.

Thanks. ;~;/ I just had to draw it the minute it came to mind. But when I thought about Sorey being in Berseria's time period I got really sad. Stay in your own time, Sorey and Mikleo. I am pretty curious about how the two game parties would interact though.

I agree! I'm not going to pretend Zestiria didn't have its faults by any means, but I can't help but love the game anyways. I'm very happy to own it. I have to admit, Berseria kind of covered for some of Zestiria. I feel like Zestiria is a better game thanks to Berseria's storyline. Meanwhile Berseria does a good job of standing on its own as well. I was pretty impressed.

You're very welcome! I would think they would clash occasionally, especially given what Magilou is like and Velvet might be a little overprotective of Laphicet, but ultimately they would get along. It would especially be nice if we could actually see Edna and Eizan interact; we never really got a chance to see something like that in Berseria. Also, I would imagine that Sorey would definitely try to stop Artorious' plan.

Yeah, I just love stories with a good hero; sure, Sorey may not be perfect, but at least he is a decent guy. And I have to say, when he fuses with the others it is pretty awesome. Man, if only Velvet and the others could see how far Armatization has come since their time. And yeah, Berseria definitely helps to expand on the Zestiria lore while still managing to stand on its own merits. I just wish they could have added a little more to both games, particularly in Zestiria. While I like the four main elemental Seraphim, I would have liked the inclusion of a darkness element and light element seraphim...and maybe even a seventh element of some sort. That's at least one thing I would have done differently, in my opinion.

What about you, Feather-Snake, what would you have done anything differently?

As cool as that would have been in concept, I think adding more Seraphim elements would actually have made the situation even worse due to how much more work they would have to do to include them. The dev team obviously already had too much game on their hands and too little time to finish it as it was. Unfortunately, that’s how game dev is. But it would have been nice if they had more time. It felt lacking in a way compared to other titles. Legendia takes place on a single ship for the entire game and I still feel like I somehow got more genuine exploration out of it than Zestiria even though Zesty had huge, often nice looking maps. Not sure how to explain it. *shrugs*

I think having the game’s obvious flaws fixed would be a great start to improvement. The battle camera issues, poor quest design in places, the all important ruins Sorey and Mikleo love so much were hardly ever all that different or exciting, maybe a little improvement to the tutorials, and there were lots of extremely miss-able but important skits (Berseria had the opposite problem. Not sure how I feel about the sheer amount of auto skits that interrupt).

I feel like Zestiria had a lot going on story-wise they didn’t have time to balance too. Way too much lore unexplored and plot points with not enough time to play out. I’m actually okay with Alisha being a temporary party member and liked what the story was trying to do there. It just kind of...missed the mark in execution. It could have been handled better. The pacing of the game is off in quite a few parts, and the English translation feels weird in places, not to say the translators or VAs did a poor job by any means. (I played through in both languages. I admire how much work went into translating all of those jokes/puns into English. Holy cow.) But once again. Too much game, not enough time.

I still think Zestiria is a good game. Even my least favorite Tales title was still a solid game. It’s just...for Tales titles they seemed a little lacking. Zesty managed to win me over despite everything though. Haha. (Sorry for the text wall. )

First of all, the wall of text is just fine, my friend. Trust me, I am plenty guilty of that myself.

Yeah, I can understand that myself too about adding in additional elements. But its not just time that is factor, but space as well. What I mean there is only so much space on a single disk (blue ray or otherwise) for the vast amount of data needed to make a whole game world. I'm just saying it would have made things a little more interesting in my opinion.

Also, I get what you are saying about Legend, but still that whole ship was technically a whole continent; seriously, even the smallest continent on earth could take years to see everything.

One last thing I just wanted to mention: another reason I brought up the two Seraph of the Darkness and Light Elements is that I might write my own version of Zesteria in the future and I might include them in the story. Still need to iron out the details, though...

Good to know. Haha.

True enough. Disc space has definitely gotten more impressive over time though. I remember opening Star Ocean and being surprised it had two discs. (it was the first game I got that was like that) And for sure. Sometimes I wonder what kind of game Zesty would have been if they'd had even one more year to work on it. I've heard the Tales team is a little more rushed to finish games these days. Don't know if that's the case, but it would explain a few things. Or maybe they just spent too much on hiring Ufotable for their amazing animation talent. Haha.

Indeed. A lot of Tales games have you running around the world/visiting others though, so I was impressed with what Legendia did. I will admit I was hesitant to play it when I heard it all took place on the ship. I was far from disappointed though. Like I said, Zestiria's maps were beautiful, just...a little lacking somehow.

Good luck with your story if you do it! And figuring out how you might include some new elements. Even though they technically aren't (I think?), Symonne felt a lot like dark and Maotelus like light. That's all that comes to mind on my end.

Yeah, sometimes I think they should go back to the multi-disk system; it would make it easier to get more content into a game without worrying about running out of space on a single disk. I know it is a bit of a hassle, but like I said more content on a disk...although I guess that is what DLC is for these days.

Don't forget these guys have some serious competition with games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Persona. I imagine they mainly rush because they do not want their games to be overshadowed by them. Seriously, think about how FFVII blew up the VG world when it first came. I cannot help but imagine that other RPGs want to have their own "FFVII."

I think it was because it was too big and difficult to get around; even when you unlocked fast travel, it actually cost you money to move around whereas in previous games, it was free.

Sorry for a super late reply…

I feel like I’ve been complaining too much about Zesty here. Haha. I don’t know, I think I’ll always feel pretty conflicted about it. Even more so than (most) other games in the main series. But it had been forever since I actually played any others, and it’s not like other Tales don’t have their own issues. (Like all games really) So I might be a little too hard on it. It’s made vast improvements, tried new things, looks really nice, had one of my favorite cast of characters so far, I enjoyed the things they tried to do with the story, and I had fun playing. Also, personally I’m glad more games offer dual audio these days. I enjoyed both audio options and switch between them.

I can’t say I know too much about competition with other games. I’ve heard it’s kind of a small series, but yeah. *shrugs* They’ve had a few titles that really helped it gain ground in localization though. Thank goodness.

As for traveling around, I really like exploring and running around game maps. Zestiria’s felt a little empty I guess. A gorgeous view, but running around is kinda not all that exciting outside skits. Like not that it isn’t great, but...pfft I don’t know. I miiight be unfairly comparing it with other game maps even outside of Tales. But I feel like I had fun exploring some earlier Tales maps too, even though they didn’t have such powerful consoles and whatnot.

Hey, don't worry about, you'd be surprised how long it takes me to respond to some of my comments and replies.

Exactly, every game has its positives and negatives, but at the end of the day all that matters is whether you enjoy playing it and I can honestly say I enjoy playing it.

Yeah, trust me, its way more brutal than you would think.

I suppose that is true, but how do you think they should have filled it? If they put too much in the field, it would get too cluttered and be very difficult to move around.

I wish Tales luck in the future. I wonder what they'll do next.

That's the question. Haha. One I still haven't quite figured out. Maybe I should replay some games I liked the maps in and compare notes. It has been a while... I liked checking out Zesty's towns. And a couple of the dungeons were fun to be in. Is it unfair to talk about Xenoblade? I love running around that place. Okami is fun too. I'm having a brain blank on others right now, so I guess it's definitely time for some replays. I tend to forget details after a while.

Hard to say; I mean, they could try doing a trilogy with the Zesteria/Berseria world. Goodness knows, it has definitely improved and this would the first successful sequel/prequel they have done with any of their games (at least to my knowledge).

It is definitely hard to put your finger on exactly what it is that makes traveling in a world map, but I think it is because every world map in every video game had its own unique...ingredient that made it special to travel across. With Xenoblade, as pointed by chuggaconroy on YouTube, 95% of the time if you can see a place--even one far off in the distance--you can go to it (also, it is fair to talk about Xenoblade). With Okami, it was the unique arts style that gave the world a much more vibrant look, plus the also animated things like the wind blowing and grass swaying and leaves dancing in the wind.

I think the reason why Zesteria's world map seemed so dull was because it did not have much in the way of animations that really showed off nature (at least, that is what it felt like to me). Also, they went for some pretty basic gimmicks as well such as creatures and people in the overwold, but it was not quite enough to give the world some real pop, if you catch my drift.

FeatherSnek In reply to mzhamma [2017-06-27 20:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Haven't they done a few prequel/sequels? I do wonder if the seraph mythology will stick around in even unrelated future games like the spirits have in a lot of others before or if we'll never see it again. Should be interesting to see where they'll go either way.

And those are some fair points on world maps. I guess in Okami, you actually interacted with the field maps too. Reviving trees, making things bloom, helping characters and animals. The world was very there with a history you explore and influence, not just plot and towns and people, but the environment too. Hey, come to think of it, Legendia really messed with the ship environment as things went on. And Symphonia was...Symphonia. >_>;;

Well, the whole life-size open world thing is still pretty new to Tales. And Zestiria implemented battles that happen right where the encounter takes place for the first time. (hence some unfortunate camera bugs) I'm sure it will continue to improve. At least I hope so. Haha.

mzhamma In reply to FeatherSnek [2017-06-30 02:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but most of those sequels and prequels have not been as big a success as the main games. In this case, however, the prequel turned out better than the original game; plus, I just really like trilogies. I mean, just look at Star Wars or the Lord of the Rings (both the novels and the movies).

Honestly, I don't think the seraphs are going to be sticking around. Don't get me wrong, I liked them and they were interesting, but I just really missed the old school summon spirits of past Tales games. They are practically a staple of the series along with cooking and artes. Also, you need to consider the fact that they would have change the mythology of the seraphs for each game to fit with the plot and I just do not see that happening. The summoning spirits felt more flexible to me as they could be tailored to work into the story of any Tales game no problem. Plus, they just seem like a real staple for the game and I think it would detract from their overall value and appeal.

Yeah, that was true of Okami for sure; I actually forgot about interacting with the environment myself. And while I cannot speak of Legendia's setting, I can definitely agree about Symphonia.

It is a new concept, so naturally they would not necessarily get it right on the first try, but still they made a good effort nonetheless. And I also believe they will continue to improve on this aspect as well. It certainly seemed like they did in Berseria, at least.
