Personality: Jie tries to project an air of cool confidence and may seem distant at first, but under the surface lurks a relatively friendly and dorky sort--Jie is just awkward with people. History:
Jie's parents were guardians--though Jie's initial plan was to follow in their lead, that quickly went out the window when they started to learn more advanced sciences in school. Though their first love was astronomy and astrophysics, their father--a domineering sort of parent--pushed for them to pursue something that would be more readily applicable to immediate day-to-day life. At their mother's urging, Jie complied, using the roundabout logic that mechanical engineering could tie back into astronomy and space exploration down the road in order to justify it to themself.

Jie butted heads with their parents more and more often over time, due to their parent's more rigid views regarding Jie's identity and the kind of choices they ought to make--as soon as Jie was able, they applied for separate housing in order to put a little distance between them. They've been coexisting in relative peace since then, i.e. Jie avoids them as much as possible outside of regular (awkward) family dinners.
