A very beautiful portrait of Ezio. The lights and shades on skin are very nice!

When you shade on a digital piece like this, do you have to color each square inch with your stylus? Or can you use solid colors and then some sort of shading tool?

You can generally do both; I prefer the former method because it allows for more control, but it is time consuming... Different types of brushes help, though.
For the latter, you can also choose a color/tint, fill the area, and then use the 'burn' and 'dodge' tools to do a sort of smooth shading; they darken and lighten. But that doesn't work with everything, and if overapplied, it tends to look like the exposure in the pic is wayyy too high.
I'd say nearly all of the time I put into these is just plain old shading with the stylus, now that I think about it. Haha.

If these are the results you earn by using the stylus, then it seems like time well spent - when I first saw this one, I almost mistook it for one of those drawings you do with a lump of coal (which I won't ask how you got).
One more Q if you don't mind: did you work on this for five hours straight, or with distractions?

I definitely took breaks in between and worked on homework before going back to it. Probably about 4 or 5 breaks total, one of them being nearly 6 hours long. Otherwise, it'd have looked twice as disproportionate as it does now, considering our frustrating brains make us see what they want to see, not what's really there. Bahaha.
