Kind like the whole idea with Infinities, this is one of those "what if" situations. It's mentioned (in the junior novelization, albeit, but still) that Qui-Gon left Obi-Wan behind while he went into Mos Espa because Obi-Wan was to protect the "Queen." The idea is, then, what if Darth Maul had decided to go after anyone on the ship first, instead of Qui-Gon & Anakin?

I still think Obi-Wan would have beat him, though.

The reason there is a lovely, huge spot of white on Maul's cloak is because my pen decided to die before I could finish. That, & Maul has arms like an orangutan.
