Description For #watercolorists ' Aqua Project - Textures

Right then, you're probably wondering what this is.
This is a way of creating watercolor textures that I haven't yet seen on dA, which I find rather odd, since we were taught this back in junior high during art class. Since no such thing exists on dA (please do correct me if I'm wrong), there are no tutorials for it, so I shall try and explain this to the bets of my abilities.

String texture tutorial

Pick a piece of string 50-100 cm long. The color of the string doesn't matter.
On a plate, pour some diluted ink or watercolor and dip the string in the mix. Make sure you soak it nicely and also leave the last 5 cm of it dry.
Take a piece of paper. I used an A5 sheet for mine.
While the string is still wet, lay it on the paper, forming loops in whichever pattern you like. Once the string touches the paper, do not move it or lift it, as it will create smudges. Also, leave the 5 cm dry part outside the paper.
Cover the whole thing with a sheet equal in size or larger.
Apply pressure with your hand.
While one hand is still applying pressure, use the other to pull the string out. Do not lift the string, as it will tear the paper. Instead, try to keep it parallel to the surface you're working on. Pull all of the string out.
Remove the sheet you used for covering and let the whole thing dry.
Success.

Hope I didn't make it sound complicated, because it's actually quite a simple thing to do.
Also, remember that you should work fast. Do not let the string dry on the paper, or you will not obtain the desired texture.
If you decide to give this a try, please show me, as I'm curious to see how it turned out.
Have fun.

Here's how it turned out for others:

Just remember to send me a link to the result, I'd like to post the work in the artist's comments so that other people can see how it turned out.

I've never seen such a way of creating texture with watercolor, and I find it very interesting I have to try it sometime

I've made a quick experiment here by pulling both ends of the string. Not an impressive piece, but I'm happy to give it a go.

i've tried it a couple of times but it always get too wet and i don't quite get that texture :S but i'll keep trying!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Feidhelm In reply to HitomiMelissa [2010-08-27 16:48:02 +0000 UTC]

That is odd.
The string is supposed to be wet in order to obtain the texture. What sort of paper are you using?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HitomiMelissa In reply to Feidhelm [2010-08-28 01:15:29 +0000 UTC]

uh, that's probably teh problem :S I was using 180g canson paper, which is kinda like cardboard

Feidhelm In reply to abasss [2010-08-21 06:24:46 +0000 UTC]

Or some vase. I still don't know what sort of context to include this texture in. Perhaps a flower bowl, but I don't know how.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

abasss In reply to Feidhelm [2010-08-21 13:29:43 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I've been thinking about that too. Abstract is the only thing I could get. But we could use multiple strings with multiple colors, creating different shapes.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Feidhelm In reply to abasss [2010-08-21 16:56:44 +0000 UTC]

You could die the same string in more colors, for a homogeneous look.
