Description
I was drawing a portrait of one of my characters (fav.me/d9p63ya ), (actually the mother of a side-character who's beginning to get his own storyline), and I felt like there should be something in the background... and a clock would be nice. After 3 different designs for the thing I setteled upon this one (because dragons are awesome...ok not only, I wanted to have this thing to directly relate to its owning family, of coures dragons are still super-awesome).I made this schematical drawing of it, maybe I will be painting it semi-realistic someday...
As you maybe can tell from size of the two sabres, this clock is supposed to be quite big. It's like a status symbol, and a heirloom from 2 or 3 generations ago. The swords are military officer's sabres (They have like a military tradition in that family and all the firstbors have to "suffer" from that), the pendulum has the coat of arms of the grand-empire-Esgalath on it, the wooden dragon itself stands for this once mighty empire and its (former) Power (so most likely the one who commissioned the clock once was really patriotic/militaristic).
Drawing this has inspired me to further refine the time-calculating concept of my fantasy world: My main concept behind it was to create something more logical and rational (but maybe not practical) than our time claculating.
- the planet revolves slower around itself compared to our earth -> longer days, less days per year
Time calculating:
1 year -> 312/3 days
1 year -> 15 months á 20 days +1 month á 12/3 days
1 month -> 4 quarters/weeks á 5 days
1 day -> 20 hours (24 earth hours ~>17 fantasy hours)
1 hour -> 100 minutes
new year is ~ beginning of spring/end of winter in the northern hemisphere
The clock's dial has 20 subdivisions (for each hour of the day) so: noon is at 5:00 and midnights at 15:00
This clock also shows the full date: so in this moment it is: 14:04(HH:MM) on the 18.05.(1027) (DD.MM.(YYYY)) ok, one still needs to know wich year it is
I hope this was interesting to anyone...

Very compact and well-integrated graphically.

Wow, awesome work! It's great how you've though it through so well and thoroughly, do you want to make a replica of it some time? I'd love to have something like that hanging in my room, but I couldn't sleep at all with the sound of the pendulum. Still, very cool indeed

thank you
oh, I would also take only the sabres or only the dragon's head....hm I think I won't ever make something like this...

Wow, you've really done a great job in making all the relative sizes fit again... And the metallic texture of the dial is very cool as well.
Ok, if you want to make it out of actual wood that's probably really difficult and heavy. But if it only has to look like wood you could try it with lighter and easier material.
