I used to jive. I never got to rock and roll or the twist.
Jiving was great.

i learned late that there is an american jive. all i new for a long time was the zulu jive from south africa. i even had a band "jive kappelle". we played mostly on punk concerts where the punks did some pogoing to our music. and also very late i saw some africans dance the zulu jive. this looked quite funny: during dancing they kept touching their feet with their hands.
i just missed a rare film from the 50s, which was shown in hildesheim about south african street music...

There was a South African singer around twenty years ago. A white man who sang and danced with Zulus. I can't remember his name. He was popular in Europe. Johnny Clegg.( When you try to remember it comes after a while. )
Yes, they would slap their feet. It was a very vigourous dance. Very attractive.

I learned American jive in England before rock and roll. It was the sort that people danced to big band music.

i heard of him. there was a small popularity for african jive and "mbube" choir music through paul simon's "graceland" in the early 80s. i had a record with this choir music. old recordings, i think the earliest being from 1908, or so. and there was one song "mbube" (lion) that gave the entire style the name. when you listened to it, suddenly you caught yourself humming "the lion sleeps tonight"...
i heard this big band jive and also "jump jive" from my brother, who knows very much about many styles of music and who has a huge collection of records...

I sang that lion song. There was the good version and a silly version made to make money from it. The original was very nice.
I know Graceland too.

I didn't really dance in a jumping way, more of a sliding, easy way. It was fun.

I have a lot of records but they are almost all classical music. I forget to listen to them, which is very silly of me.

it's not necessarily (i can't remember how to write this) silly. there are times when the taste and interest changes. i do a lot of music with loops. i started long time ago with real tape loops. now, with my computer and my 8-track recorder i can let them flow. some weeks ago i made my longest piece ever. it runs for about 50 minutes and just keeps on flowing and going in a very steady slow wave. it's excellent for working on abstract pictures, like we do.
rebecca likes it to fall asleep and slide into her dreams. and i often think of you, when i listen to it and make my mirrors. i really would like to know your opnion about it. sometimes i can imagine you sitting there making your apo manips and letting yourself drift along on that wave...

Although I am a music lover I can only really listen when I'm doing something like cooking. If I sit down to listen, I think of something and forget to listen. I need an automatic occupation. Washing the dishes.

I used to listen a lot, mainly on France Musique. I like classical and music from around the world like traditional Indian instrumental music or Spanish guitar.
I don't listen to pop or much modern young people's music, even though my son makes some on his computer.

I listened when my son lived here at school, then when he left... I stopped. I wanted him to like all music and he does. When there was no-one left to listen with, I just stopped.

I started to listen to people explaining things on France Culture, and started learning things I didn't know. I'm interested in world events, geopolitics, even economy.
I would like to understand philosophy but it's difficult.

I have lots of music in records and CDs and about 100 cassettes. One day I'll start listening again.

i can understand you very well. but concerning an "automatic occupation" this is exactly what i'm talking about. this music of mine is nothing really "to listen to". it's sort of being carried along on it. the evolvement(?) is very slow. i thought of the minute hand of a clock. as long as you watch it, it doesn't seem to move. once you look away and look again, it has moved a bit. well, i like it very much when i work on my pictures. it fits good together...
(but some people don't even recognize it as "music". i don't care if it is or not. i like it...)
