How do you keep the base so similar but switch out the facial expressions so nicely XD I always mess up with the layers

Haha, that's because I don't redraw most of it. When it comes to base icons, I separate my lineart layers strategically so the parts that shift most (eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, ears, etc) are separate from the base body. I avoid redrawing unless it's a very drastic expression shift hah, and reuse all I can to be practical.
