Description Well this uhm..took a while
I did some skull reconstructions,I used real skulls(well the only ones that I could find on google),and an illustration for proailurus cause there wasn't any real skull image of it(unfortunately!).
Besides from felids I decided to include both feliforms(barbourofelids and nimravids) to balance the whole thing.
I would've missed something if I hadn't included these very famous marsupials that look everything but cat like!

You forgot the gorgonopsids.

Sabretooth: from the Permian to the Holocene (Smilodon populator actually lived into the Holocene)

That's fantastic. I would have loved to have seen Barbourofelis fricki in there as well. Also, Machairodus giganteus has been reclassified as Amphimachairodus. Furthermore, a recent discovery in Greece indicates at least one cheetah-like, lynx-to-cougar-sized sabertooth did exist; Yoshi minor. Also, I think i would have liked to have seen your take on Machairodus horribilis, the sabertooth with the biggest skull of all. Now that's one that could easily give Smilodon a run for its money in terms of size.

Absolutely fantastic, I love prehistoric creature illustration, I use them as inspiration for my pokemon fusions XD and also for d&d creatures. These are very helpful, I'm gonna dig through your gallery, hoping to find some full body anything. Great work <3

Beautiful work! Makes me feel kind of bad that I’ve lost interest in reconstructing prehistoric cats for the last couple years. They were one of my favorite doodling subjects during high school.

Awesome anatomy on all these heads. I think they look most likely better and more aesthetic than how they should have appeared. Kurteni's face was likely flatter than that of jubatus but who cares. I love the proportions you used to depict the ancient cheetah.

Thanks!
Yeah I think that my style came out too much on these, regardless of that I think that the best one I managed to reconstruct was smilodon.
Acinonyx kurteni must have had overall a pretty "catty" face,I was surprised on how it looked like a "real" cheetah after I traced it over the skull(though I had to hand draw the lower jaw since the original skull is just a piece).
I would love to see how felines looked in the past(probably not much different from today haha) so I had to reconstruct some of them, though my feline anatomy is limited so I could be totally wrong xD.
When it comes to bringing extinct mammals back to life though then this guy [link] is the absolute best, because I feel like his drawings are the most accurate I've ever seen out there(also was my inspiration in doing this)

Don't be too hard on yourself, though if you love paleontology maybe you can become an artist for that field?

I've seen mauricio's work and his big cats are nice. I like how there is a story behind his pictures, and this may be my favorite.
[link]

As far as realism goes however, my recent favorite for 3d has to be this guy.
[link]

He may not render in a pedantic manner but his smilidon and tiger look amazing for 3d

Thank you so much for doing these. ...and doing an illustration of Xenosmilus that doesn't look dorky.
I love the roaring expressions of Meganthereon nihowanensis and Hoplophoneus, with these mandibular flanges they look really grim. And the fur patterns are so beautiful and well thought of.

Gah, you astound me, as always! I love these!! Panthera Spelaea is my fav and Pseudaelurus sp. reminds me of a golden cat. I remember seeing Thylacosmilus atrox at the dino museum a month or so ago. The skeletons are so amazing in person, and you've captured their realism so well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FelineFire In reply to akeli [2010-11-05 01:02:42 +0000 UTC]

I based some coats off real felines, pseudaelurus from a rusty spotted, proailurus from a iriomote cat but yeah they didn't really differes much from living cats after all.
Ah I wish there was a museum which has feline fossils(nimravids would do to!),the only museum I was at was a geological one, which had fossilized dino eggs XD

The last four on the bottom are the marsupials. Acinonyx Kurtei is the an ancestor of cheetahs ? I don't know I'm guessing since it looks very much like a cheetah. While Adelphailrus kansensei looks like the ancestor of tigers. So am I'm right with my answers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FelineFire In reply to openmindness [2010-11-05 00:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately cats didn't happen much during history(unlike canines),so their fossil record is rather low to establish a solid evolutionary tree.
Acinonyx kurteni is the oldest cheetah known to date, rather than an ancestor I think it was more of a representative to the cheetah lineage(most likely the cheetah ancestor was some kind of small cat).
Adelphailurus kansensis was a member of the sabretooth tiger subfamily so unlikely to be the ancestor of tigers,it is thought that panthera palaeosinensis is the true ancestor of some(if not all) pantherines such as the tiger or the lion.

nimravids is a distantly related of a true felids in most ways

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FelineFire In reply to DarkCatTheKhajjit [2011-05-08 22:45:59 +0000 UTC]

yup,I mentioned the marsupials, that's why they are at the end.
I can't tell how related both families(barbourofelids and nimravids)are to felidae,Alan Turners book "The big cat's and their fossil relatives" is long outdated, and there is no uptaded version which tells why barbourofelids are now more related to felidae than nimravidae.
I guess these three families had the same ancestor,my idea was the nimravids being as closely related to felids like hyenas or viverrids are.

Thank you for answering my question. Do think they'll ever be able to find more fossils and build evolutionary tree in future.

Gorgeous work! I was a little confused about the inclusion of the marsupials at the bottom until I read your artist comment. This really is a great visual list of prehistoric cats ^^ Really inspiring. Maybe I'll have to do something with birds...
