Description
I have had this in my mind for years...Aniu; the white wolf from Balto, my one of my favourite movies. The scene in which Aniu appears is still my all time favourite scene from all movies I have ever seen – see here www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucfHDO… .I still clearly remember the moment when I saw this scene for the first time- I think I felt the same surprise as Balto – it has made an enormous impression and has had major influence on my artwork ever since. Also the music score, composed by the awesome James Horner who died recently T.T is still my all time favourite -together with the theme of Schindler’s List (by John Williams) - which is highly similar: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLK5OW… - and I play both themes very often on my keyboard. It was in the end of winter 1998 (I was 9) when I saw Balto for the first time and I already had a fascination for snow, wolves and the North at that time. I remember I have spent weeks and weeks on internet (still with a terribly slow modem at that time) on the overwhelming amount of Balto-fan sites. My favourite was Balto’s Zodiac – made by ‘Snow Wolf’ – later known as SnowWolfMystic on DA and now known as (who makes fantastic artwork too!).
Many of these fan sites are offline but these ones is still there www.theicecave.org/balto.shtml and fluke.theicecave.org/main.shtm…
The movie Balto just made my fascination for snow and wolves grow exponentially. It is actually still a major inspiration source for my art. Although I mainly focus on felids like my siderians, I still love wolves too. I have been watching Wolf’s Rain recently and wanted to draw these characters with a new drawing technique – and then :devmudstar-siberia: mentioned that Aniu should be part of this drawing experiment too – and I totally agreed!!! The technique experiment here is that I drew everything in one layer (except for the blurred snow on top of it)- and I think it turned out well.
I have based this drawing on the scene itself – mainly the pose (quite wide for a wolf, but I think that it’s just the pose – I tried to make it look anatomically correct). The background is inspired by the mental images I get when I hear the song Reach for the Light (see lyrics below) www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_tq7V… . It turned out to be literally a sparkewolf…
See here more about Aniu, the white wolf balto.wikia.com/wiki/Aniu. Her appearance in the first movie is really beautiful and inspiring but I really don’t like her look in the second movie – they totally screwed up the design.
Here are the lyrics:
Aniu/ the White Wolf belongs –I think- to Universal pictures. I have known the animator’s name, but can’t find it. The art here belongs to me. Don’t use it without my permission
Deep in the night
The winds blow cold
And in a heartbeat
The fear takes hold
Deep in the storm
There's a place that's soft and still
Where the road waits to be taken
If you only will
The voices inside you
Can lead your soul astray
Believe in what you dream
Don't turn away
Don't you turn away
Reach for the light
You might touch the sky
Stand on the mountaintop
And see yourself flying
Reach for the light
To capture a star
Come out of the darkness
And find out who you are
Somewhere in time
The truth shines through
And the spirit knows
What it has to do
Somewhere in you
There's a power with no name
It can rise to meet the moment
And burn like a flame
And you can be stronger
Than anything you know
Hold on to what you see
Don't let it go
Don't you let it go
Reach for the light
You might touch the sky
Stand on the mountaintop
And see yourself flying
Reach for the light
To capture a star
Come out of the darkness
And find out who you are
Now, there's no turning back
When your destiny is calling
Listen to the thunder roll
And let your heart break free
Reach for the light
You might touch the sky
Stand on the mountaintop
And see yourself flying
Reach for the light
To capture a star
Come out of the darkness
And find out who you are
Reach for the light
You might touch the sky
Stand on the mountaintop
And see yourself flying
Reach for the light
To capture a star
Come out of the darkness
And find out who you are
Reach for the light

They suck very much yes. Although the backgrounds are nice and Balto2 has some interesting spiritual points, but the animation of the characters is quite crap and the White Wolf was a great disappointment. I wasn't even bothered to watch 3.

Firstly, I love both Maurice LaMarche and Jodi Benson and their work in other things, but they just did not cut it. Same for Charles Fleischer as Boris, as much as I like him I just think he could not pull off that edge that the late Bob Hoskins put into the character from the first movie. Kevin Schon also did not sound as comedic as Phil Collins.Did yoy know Balto's design changed throughout the sequels? Also, the first was just made to cash in on Lion King 2 with the whole main character's daughter going on a advanture to discover who they are to the world around them and where they fit into it. The second one was like Lady and the Tramp 2 with the son doing the same thing. Another thing, both were musicals! Because that's what we needed in the original! F***ing music numbers! I hate when they make musical sequels to things that weren't musicals to begin with (like Balto, The Secret of NIMH, and the Land Before Time), do you?
The only thing the sequels did right was providing the names and ideas for Balto and Jenna's children (especially Aleu and Kodi, voiced by Lacey Chabert and Sean Astin who admittedly did good performances, despite how lame the movies were). There is also how they gave Balto's mother a name, Aniu (which means 'snow' in Inuit, a fiting name since Balto said she "was white as snow" and had a warm voice that always made him feel safe, and her voice from Monnae Michaell was well casted and matching said description). I also admit the characters of Nava and Duke were interesting too (voiced respectively by the late David Carradine and his still active younger brother Keith Carradine) who people have made better use of in fan works with Nava being Aniu's twin brother (making him Balto's uncle) and Duke being a mail runner for the town. I also admit to liking Kodi's friends (Kirby, voiced by Carl Weathers; Ralph, voiced by Bill Fagerbakke; Dusty, voiced by Charity James), especially Dusty who serves as his love interest while Kirby and Ralph can serve as love interests for Aleu.
I also did not get why no one would want to adopt Aleu when the people had already accepted Balto for who and what he was (he even says he is still made fun of for being part wolf despite being a hero now! WTF!? I know both were on lower budgets than the first, but they cannot keep up with basic continuity?!). Second, Luk and Muk can't swim even though they found they could in the first!? CONTINUITY ALARM RINGING!!! Thirdly, since when has Balto yearned for flying? NEVER!!! Fourthly, I would have prefered Balto's children staying with Balto and forming a family sled team, doesn't that sound cooler and more appropriate?
Sorry, I went on kind of a rant there. I just cannot stand what the sequels did, and prefer what others have done with the fan-material they provided.

Same here. Balto was the main inspiration for me to begin with art. James Horner is /was my fave composer, Balto is my fave movie and Heritage of the Wolf my all time fave fave piece of music an movie scene all together.
This tune (variations of it) is found in other of his work: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhwmNw… and I love it.

Yeah I still remember you from my balto fandom searches, many, many years ago (if I’m right though - I remember somebody called EmberWolf at least). I still have some of your (probably?) very old art saved on my PC - now that sounds scary...And are you also the one who played that score on youtube?? That was very inspirint at least!! I just have found another sheet-music version lately - probably the original one written by James Horner (but am not 100% sure). I can send it to you if you want?
To me this score is kinda is legendary and has become nearly a part of myself - I have once said that if there is one score to be played on my funeral, that it should be Heritage of the Wolf - and the Theme from Schindler’s list. Have you heard that music actually? It is highly similar. And thanks a LOT for letting me know about Enemy at the Gates - I’m listening to the whole soundtrack right now and I discover the melody everywhere. It’s difficult to describe the happiness I feel when I ‘discover’ this melody elsewhere- or scores that are highly similar like in Schindler’s list. I’ve been hunting the whole internet to find this tune in other movie soundtracks- have found it in Titanic (only the soundtrack, not the movie) and Apollo 13 so far. I know it’s in Braveheart too, but I haven’t found the track yet. Do you know it?

Ha ha ha that is kind of ....I do not know a good word for it but (funny? Surreal?) yeah surreal for me to hear this. XD (I go squee, OMG, Squee, OMG). Someone kept track of me...I have been following some artists myself (like you, not in a creepy way XD) but seeing what they have painted next and seeing how they evolved mostly like a watch here on dA but still like on google and gone: hey that is her or that is his art. Granted there have been a few Ember Wolfs...EmberWolves...Em (you know what I mean) who has made Balto art as well so I do not think I can take credit for all (an sometimes people download my art and upload on other pages...I once found two of my pics...on a page I never ever want to see again). I have done a lot of Balto fan-art in the past and as I made progress I took them down to make room for new ones and feeling they where too crappy too keep on the page.
Yeah I made a MIDI version of it and it is the only piece of music I can play decently on piano/keyboard. YES PLEASE if it is the original yes plz!!!!! If it is this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4Mfs0… I already found it and I sort of went crazy for a few days thinking I was dreaming (out of happiness that i after searching for this sheetmusic since 1997 and this score being so important to me) XD. This girl arranged this herself (playing by ear and made the sheet music).
Yeah same here. The movie scene and music was a huge turning point for me in my life. Yeah I find it everywhere in his scores. It was his signature tune I believe. I have awalys loved his music and he has always been my favorite composer. I grew up with all the animated movies with his scores and when Titanic came out I was like HA!!!!! Nobody knew who this guy was until then and then everybody loved the music (sounds a little hipster i know, but that is just facts XD).
Titanic: LINK ME!!!!! Apollo 13 I have heard but cannot find the right part of the soundtrack again :/.

Ha yeah that's also how I followed some people - I think you may know SnowWolf from the good old Balto fandom time then. I don't know how many hours I've spend on Balto's Zodiac. I wanted to know EVERYTHING about the White Wolf and I have searched manymanymany hours to find versions of this score. Have you ever bumped into a trance version of it, made by Glacier? It's beautiful - I can send it to you if you don't have it yet! I have a few old fanworks of the White Wolf too (I prefer refering to her as that, not like Aniu).
Haha yeah same here - I haven't had any lessons on keyboard, but this was the melody I first managed to play. I'm still working on playing the whole score with left and right hand. But I usually prefer playing by ear as reading music notes is still a challenge for me.
And yep it was the that one you linked Oo...damn it's so good that I seriously thought that that one was the original!!! Seriously, how did that girl do that!! Although I would expected her to write her name under it, but maybe I haven't read good enough...as I tend to do. James Horner was also definitely my favourite composer - and still is. But when I discovered that John Williams was one year earlier with the melody of Schindler's list, I figured that James may have used this score as inspiration for his movies. But it doesn't matter to me - I love both scores and they are still different enough (although so close that I can play a blending of both on my keyboard).
Anyway Apollo 13 is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYvpBs… between 2.52 -3.30. Have you found it in Braveheart? I've searched the whole soundtrack but couldn't find it yet...

Oh yes, and Cyberwulfe with all the Kemo fan-fics XD. Loved it. Same here about the white wolf^^ (he/she is the inner wolf).
Dont get me started on the Heritage of the wolf notes....I have been searching for over ten years for it till i found this one and i have had so much help from my fellow youtubers and dA-s to come up with my version of it.
I know this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZllrK… , www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkmRGG… (I like the first one best ^^) I also have heard one like sounds like it was made of old computer sounds. My friend The Last Velkirk made this for me cause he knows how much i love the score: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xnJtZ… . I have listened for hours to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CPits…
Same here, my left hand (both hands but mostly my left) was damaged at work so I cannot get my fingers to work I sort of have to "think" to Lefty so it works as i play. i can play the easy version ok but still even if I could play the piece in my sleep I cant get those fingers to movie like I want them too XD.
Me too. It is perfect, the only thing I wanna change is the part right before the howl. I don't know but she did it. Some people have an amazing gift for playing piano and i envy them. I do not have that feel for it and I am amazed by them . Yeah, Horner,Silvestri, Williams and Zimmer are my faves but Horner will be the best of them for me. His music is special.
Nope not in Braveheart and I have only seen parts of the movie even though it runs on TV around every Christmas XD. I know it is a good quotable movie but i do not know why i have not sen the whole thing yet.
Have you seen Spirit? If you have not Hans Zimmers soundtrack (I am not a huge fan of Bryan Adams but on this album OMG) is truly amazing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=18xGyI… . The movie is epic as well (not a huge story but the animation of the horses by James Baxter...I can watch it for hours) and a good story and the color schemes, music, how they studies the behavior of a horse. Just see it if you have not.
Also i cannot stop listening to Jonathan Youngs cover of "Here I am" (the theme song for the movie): www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa-eG7…
Fun fact: they asked Adams to write a very swirly, metaphoric song about the birth of Spirit... first sentence: here I am: this is me XD. Gold.
