I didnt get to see the parade, but what was the occasion so many different characters appeared on the same float?

That's a good question, actually. I think to pay tribute to all the wonderful cartoons of the years, i think. I'm not quite sure.

the assortment strikes me as very random.
Not all of them are cartoon characters, Barney's there
Not all of them are directly geared at small children, Popeye's there and this generation doesnt know Felix the way we do (yet, with that new show comming out)
And their all liscenced under different names too.
Since this is the Macy's parade and these are authentic costumes being used, that's actually a factor.
My best guess is that these are all the characters that didint get thier own float but were still judged deserving to be in the parade.
