When creating an OC for a certain universe (Bleach, KHR, Naruto etc.) you have to match your OC to it but also be original. But the problem is: How can I create an original but believable character for this universe?

The first question I ask myself is „Why do I create an OC? „

This is a very important question indeed. It can help me to start off when creating.

Should the OC belong only to the universe or to a certain group too? Do I create it for roleplaying or writing fan fictions?

Aspect one is the „aim“!

When I answered the first question I go on wondering what I can do.

If I want an OC for roleplaying but can't roleplay male or am not interested in trying anyway then why should I create a male OC?

Aspect two is „function“!

Now the real thing starts. Get your favorite episode/chapter and go! Learn all the information about the universe given. Yeah, I know. You'll say: „Why? I know everything about it!“

Sure, but you'll surely overlook something major. So take a step back and collect factual informations also on backstories, clothing, everything typical for the canon characters. That includes a good amount of weaknesses as well. Don't ever overload an OC with strenghts because it's just unrealistic.

Aspect three is „information“!

Ok, you know your aim, the OCs function and the information on its universe.

So the next step is finally: your OC! I usally ask myself: “Who will s/he be? Which profession does s/he have? And in which position might s/she be? How did s/he became this?“ Take your information you collected earlier as a help. Also remember to not make your OC too outstanding so that s/he really fits into the universe.

The answers are very important.

Aspect four is „fate“!

After you got all this facts you can start with every artists joy: Character design!

Character design isn't just about the outfit but also the outer looks (eyes, hair etc.). Notice it has to fit the universe and your OCs backstory plus profession/position.

When creating the clothing you have to refer to the same aspects.

Aspect five is „design“!

I hope so...
But maybe we'll also read this and start to overthink their OCs.
