When creating an OC for a certain universe (Bleach, KHR, Naruto etc.) you have to match your OC to it but also be original. But the problem is: How can I create an original but believable character for this universe?
The first question I ask myself is „Why do I create an OC? „
This is a very important question indeed. It can help me to start off when creating.
Should the OC belong only to the universe or to a certain group too? Do I create it for roleplaying or writing fan fictions?
Aspect one is the „aim“!
When I answered the first question I go on wondering what I can do.
If I want an OC for roleplaying but can't roleplay male or am not interested in trying anyway then why should I create a male OC?
Aspect two is „function“!
Now the real thing starts. Get your favorite episode/chapter and go! Learn all the information about the universe given. Yeah, I know. You'll say: „Why? I know everything about it!“
Sure, but you'll surely overlook something major. So take a step back and collect factual informations also on backstories, clothing, everything typical for the canon characters. That includes a good amount of weaknesses as well. Don't ever overload an OC with strenghts because it's just unrealistic.
Aspect three is „information“!
Ok, you know your aim, the OCs function and the information on its universe.
So the next step is finally: your OC! I usally ask myself: “Who will s/he be? Which profession does s/he have? And in which position might s/she be? How did s/he became this?“ Take your information you collected earlier as a help. Also remember to not make your OC too outstanding so that s/he really fits into the universe.
The answers are very important.
Aspect four is „fate“!
After you got all this facts you can start with every artists joy: Character design!
Character design isn't just about the outfit but also the outer looks (eyes, hair etc.). Notice it has to fit the universe and your OCs backstory plus profession/position.
When creating the clothing you have to refer to the same aspects.
Aspect five is „design“!

I think you may have mixed up the ending a little. Under aspect four, you’re discussing design, which is aspect five. “Fate” is never discussed. Maybe I’m just crazy and am in need of coffee though…
I this under aspect two: “That includes a good amount of weaknesses as well. Don't ever overload an OC with strenghts because it's just unrealistic.”

Thank you for commenting on all my tutorials~
I seriously never wrote that point and noone remarked that.
I just saw too many super strong OCs back then.

You're welcome! I really need to read more tutorials/guides on here...
Really? No one said anything? Wow.
A lot of people have the same issue in their writing in general. They make super-perfect, super-awesome characters that are flawless. Those characters are just snooze-fests, if you ask me...

Hi there, it's me again
I made a tutorial as well and wanted to ask if it seems helpful to you [link]
you influenced me a little, especially with the first steps, so I wondered if it's ok.

It seems helpfull. You could have add how face shapes appear btw.
(E.g. round, short faces seem child-like.)
It's ok because you credited me and it's not realy copied but more like "Think about it before you start with this tutorial".

ha, me too! It's just I'm always (or at least very often) thinking in English and when I speak I have to remember the German stuff or I know words in English but not the German translation lol

Wow, exactly the same for me. So weird when I have to speak in German sometimes...
Lol, yeah. Most stuff about DA and art in my case.

Lol, that's why I don't even try it. My mum doesn't understand more than a few words in English and she has even less of an idea about art.

my mum was teacher for art and works now as an art therapist so she should at least have a little idea of art.
but her english is too bad at the moment (she just always prefered French)...

I think it's quite fine!
Maybe you could add that even the outer apperiance of the character should suit the universe. e.g. you won't find a blonde person in ATLA. (but maybe this refers to the point 'information'?)
No, I think it's a good advice for 'freshmen' Hope to see more of those.

you already told about the 'unusual strong characters' - maybe you could make a tutorial about how to avoid such characters (e.g. which faults are usually combined with which streight; maybe you can include those non-natural characters for examples and how they rather should be, that people notice where's the fault.), I believe there are not so many who did it yet..

inky-thoughts In reply to Felizias [2012-10-08 14:27:13 +0000 UTC]
well I don't get really useful things there
you could at least start one, maybe also with the aspect how the characters are not too similar to the owner himself. I believe that's a big issue, too (just to say, I had this problem very often...)

Felizias In reply to inky-thoughts [2012-10-08 14:33:28 +0000 UTC]
So you mean a tutorial on how to create balanced characters?
Yeah, it's hard to avoid that... (I hardly manage to distance from my characters too.
)
