Description
Spock stands 13" tall and is 100% needle felted wool sculpted with a barbed felting needle. He stands on his own with flexible joints without the use of a wire armature. There is no sewing or painting - the clothes are needle felted as part of the sculpture but made to look separate. Sculpting features with dyed wool is rather like painting and sculpting at the same time.An original Felt Alive Wool Sculpture by Kay Petal

This is wonderful, really great portrait of Spock!
How do you make him posable without using a wire armature?

Thanks! I use needle felted joint making techniques that gives my dolls nearly a natural range of motion - but to pose them for photos I have to use pins because the wool is flexible and has memory and wants to return to its original pose.

How cute! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of wool do you use?

Thanks Gina - I use some really great wool batting that's imported from Europe - you can learn all about the supplies I use at my website www.feltalive.com.

Ah, that is interesting! I always thought about using wool batting but since its not the best for wet felting I never got around to it
Oh! And on your site I saw that you are the owner/admin for the felting forum! My dad, Horst Couture, is on there everyday and begs me to join!

LOL! He is pretty cool, if I do say so myself. He is definitely a fave of mine. I know you'll have fun with your supplies. And if you liked my videos, you would enjoy my DVD workshops - my latest is a 10 hour long 4 disc set where I demonstrate making a doll from start to finish.

Most of my dolls want to smile but I really wanted this classic Spock stern look - his face was quite a fun challenge.

I just brought out my needle and began my insane high speed stabbing to finish the first of three pieces going to the Atlanta show Labor Day weekend. Woohoo! And 16 pounds of dyed wool to order! My husband is beginning to twitch. >_<

Careful!! I always stab myself when I go into speed mode. So what is the Atlanta Show?

Oh I am quite a speed demon when domonstrating it and I have perforated fingers to prove it. ^_^ Expecially when I'm supposed to have a finished product at the end of the day... Things like Moray-Anna [link] are what is done after 5 days of 16 hours a day demo-ing to the public.
The Atlanta show I refer to (there are quite a number of them, too) is Dragon*Con [link] . It's held over the Labor Day weekend and draws (officially) 25,000 people. Trust me the numbers are much higher than that with the year before pulling 150K+ through the doors.
You ought to think about entering your dolls in the national doll makers shows. There are at least 3 major groups the host them and they are all awesome with a variety of dolls to boggle the mind. I think Art Doll magazine has a listing in the back of major doll exhibitions going on all over the US and world. (I'm sorry to say I have been remiss in looking as I am focussing on getting back into illustration.)

I will have to check out the shows - I've only been needle felting for less than three years and had never considered that I would become a doll maker - there is so much to think about. My dolls are in the current edition of Art Doll Quarterly - a 4 page spread featuring my Li'l celebrities and that is a thrill but I long to show them off in person rather than in pics - doll shows would be just the thing. And demo'ing needle felting is pretty fun - I draw crowds here in Alaska every time I demo but Alaska crowds aren't that crowded.
Your Moray-Anna is gorgeous.

Yay! A 4 page spread! Too cool! ^_^
As to drawing a crowd while demo-ing, yeah. It's tons of fun to see peoples' faces as I talk to them while stabbing the wool and maintain eye contact. It makes them crazy. >_< Oh I can be so bad sometimes.
Still to have them watch, leave and come back again and again over the course of the 5 days is a heck of a treat and occasionally I get someone putting down a few dollars for being the entertainment that day. Maybe I should have a mason jar on my table for tips... Hmmmmmm
^_^
