Chapter 3 - The Test

It was a strange feeling being up in orbit. The artificial gravity felt just like that: artificial, it felt just like Earth's gravity but I kept expecting myself to start floating at any second. In fact, as I sat there in my new quarters on the Watchtower, my body kept feeling like it was about to lift off into the air. I needed to get out of this room and get some food in me...

I stepped out of my quarters wearing a form fitting t-shirt and sweat pants much to my dismay because now my clothes could show off the curves this new body had. With a groan of frustration, I made my way through the halls and back to the elevator I used before to bring myself down to what was labelled at the "main deck" which had me curious until the doors opened revealing a massive area where dozens of heroes were using like a hub to either meet, find work, or even relax: my jaw dropped upon the sight of it. I stepped out and started immediately towards the massive windows which gave me a perfect view of the Earth below,

"Whoa..." I gasped in astonishment only to hear a voice come from behind me, making me jump out of my skin,

"Sure is something, isn't it?" First I was tempted to scream then I was tempted to punch him: it was the fastest man alive, the Flash who nearly laughed at my reaction, "Haha, sorry about that. I always forget my speed makes my entrances a little more blunt." After taking a deep breath, I looked to him with scoffing laugh,

"It's okay. I'm a little jumpy ever since...this." I gestured to my whole body with disapproval as the Flash nodded understandingly,

"I can't say I've gone through the same thing as you but when I got this speed, it freaked me out too. In fact, many of us didn't ask for these powers." I gazed around to the many heroes he mentioned including people like Cyborg, Black Canary, Shazam, and many more. In a way, it made me feel better to know that I wasn't the only one thrust into this type of situation. However I had to be a smartass by asking,

"But have any of them switched genders?" I asked with a smirk making the Flash laugh slightly,

"No, I'd say you're the first one to have one. Do you have any other powers besides a sex-change?" He asked curiously so I thought about that question myself, wondering if I did until I remembered the dent I put in my door so I looked around until I saw two large metal crates, clearly heavy for any regular human so I made my way over. A part of me was worried this wouldn't work so I froze for just a few seconds before gathering the courage to lift the crate up with one hand then twirl it on my fingertip like a basketball,

"WHOA! You're a strong girl!" Even I was amazed by what I was doing, in fact I couldn't believe it. All I could do was let out a laugh of amazement then look to the other crate which I instantly lifted up with my other hand making me continue to laugh at my own strength,

"This is incredible! These feel like feathers!" They really did, I was lifting these with zero strain on my body. I heard an applause from the Flash so I looked to him with a bright smile, "Can I try more weight?!?" I asked excitedly but just before the Flash could answer, I heard a familiar voice which sent fear and chills through my body,

"Later." It was Batman who seemed to appear out of nowhere from the shadows, "I just got word from Superman and Wonder Woman that they found..."your" blood. It's time for the test." Again, I felt uncomfortable around this man and even frustrated to the point that I felt like just punching him to get him off my back. That's when I heard another voice in the distance,

"Hey New Girl!" I looked over to see Zatanna hovering towards us using her magic so I formed a smile once more, "You liking it here, so far?" I looked around, shrugging, then said,

"It's better than my old apartment, that's for sure!" She and I shared a laugh as the four of us made our way towards a laboratory. Inside, it was a much more pleasant sight than the infirmary was so I wasn't as nervous as I thought I'd be plus I had Zatanna to help me, "Should be pretty quick, New Girl! Don't worry, nothing's going to happen." That's when another familiar face showed himself: Green Lantern who smiled to me,

"Good to see you again." I nervously smiled to him,

"You too, GL." Next came Superman and Wonder Woman who hovered in with Wonder Woman holding a vial of blood. They both greeted me kindly,

"I hope you're feeling better, sister." I gave a bright smile to Diana,

"Well I'm not wearing a medical gown anymore. That's certainly better." Superman would speak next,

"You ready for this, Scott?" I took a breath then nodded,

"Let's do this." Kal nodded then Diana handed the vial to Green Lantern before returning to my side. My eyes went to Batman who never stopped glaring at me so I rolled my eyes and whispered to Diana, "Is he always this much of an asshole?" Diana looked to Batman then giggled slightly,

"As a matter of fact, he always acts like this to new people. He has...trust issues." I just scoffed then retorted with,

"You're telling me. I feel sorry for whoever tries to date that one." There was just a silence so I looked up to Diana to see her smirking at me then wink before looking back to the test being performed by Green Lantern. I took a few seconds to understand her response until it finally dawned on me, "Get the hell out of here!" I looked to Zatanna who giggled slightly,

"Don't look at me, I think it's just as confusing as you do." I just shook my head,

"Wow..." I looked back to Green Lantern who was holding his ring to the vial of blood with a green light surrounding it, clearly scanning it. After the ring let out a beep, Green Lantern looked to me suggesting it was my turn so I stepped forward then took a deep breath,

"Don't worry." I heard him tell me, "It's not going to hurt at all. You're safe." Giving him a small smile, I just gave a slight nod then stood still allowing the Lantern to hold his fist out towards me, allowing his ring to project the same green light around myself. At any moment, I was expecting this to go wrong and suddenly every League member would attack me but instead, the same beep went off from the ring followed by Lantern saying, "See? Told you it wouldn't hurt." He put his hand upon my shoulder and instantly, I felt more calm so I smiled up at him as he informed everyone else, "Sending results to the Watchtower computer." With a light green flash, I heard a beep on a nearby computer which Batman immediately responded to by opening up the file which showed two blood samples. The one on the left was labelled at "Scott Garrison" and the other was labelled as "Jane Doe" and much to my relief, both appeared to be the same so I let out a sigh of happiness,

"Whew...thank god." Batman still didn't seem to show any emotion, in fact he even managed to ruin my happiness by saying,

"Interesting..." I looked back over to ask,

"Something wrong?" Batman would then explain,

"The first sample shows up as 100% human but the second shows a result of 79% human." All of us became curious about this result. I didn't want to say a thing because I was scared of the answer but Diana spoke,

"And the other twenty-one?" Batman would turn and look to me with a glare to respond with,

"....Kryptonian." The fear was definitely present in my face. The Flash was next to speak up,

"K-Kryptonian?!? That would explain the strength." Superman was staring at me with disbelief and I couldn't blame him because he was seeing another member of his dead race. Diana looked to me next only to ask gently,

"Scott. Do you know why you have Kryptonian DNA inside you?" I was frozen in fear, I didn't even notice that they all started looking shorter at first until they all looked at me with wide eyes so I looked down to see that I was in fact hovering three to four feet off the ground. I didn't know what to do other than close my eyes and panic,

"This can't be happening!" Whatever was making me hover seemed to stop so I dropped to the ground leaving a large dent in the floor. My eyes remained closed, I was terrified of my situation until I felt a hand on my cheek so I opened my eyes to see Diana gazing upon me with sympathy so I embraced her allowing her to hold me,

"Shhh. I'm here." Suddenly my whole life felt like it was upside down, inside out, twisted, and thrown in the trash: I lost my manhood, my idenity, and now my humanity so I felt like throwing up. However Diana's words felt like the words of a caring mother, "Easy, easy, child." I finally managed to slow my breathing down along with my heart beat so I could just sit there with Diana's arms around me while I looked to the rest of the League who were all watching me. Superman approached, knelt down, then quietly asked,

"What happened to you, Scott?" I remained silent for a few seconds as I gave this some thought only to realize: it was time to tell them everything. I told them the whole story about the day Power Girl was found up until the day I finally betrayed Lex Luthor and the serum that was injected into my body which was now clearly the reason behind my transformation.

All of the League stared at me with shock on their face expect for Batman who continued to glare. I didn't know what else to say so I hung my head down a bit, ashamed of this whole situation I was in. The one question popped up however that made my pull my head up,

"Karen...is she really....?" I looked to Superman as he asked that question: apparently Power Girl's name was Karen so I let out a sigh and said,

"I'm sorry..." All of the League responded in their own ways, clearly she was a respected member of this team so I felt even worse, like her death was all my fault. Batman looked back to the screen while Superman supported himself with the wall as he clearly was hurt the most by this news of Power Girl's death. However Green Lantern looked to me and spoke,

"It's not your fault, Scott. Remember that..." This was followed up by The Flash who nodded,

"No. It's Luthor's fault. We can't let him win." Barry's last few words immediately made me flash back to Power Girl's last words to me so I nodded. Diana spoke up next,

"No, we can't. And we're not going to. Scott destroyed his awful experiments and survived. We will protect Scott." The rest of the League seemed to agree with Diana's choice including Superman who looked at me with a smile but tears running down his face. That's when Batman spoke up,

"We'll need to protect her and train her." We all looked to Batman who turned back to us to let us know, or let me know in particular, "According to this, the effects of the serum are not done. In five more days, she'll be completely Kryptonian." I didn't know what to say so I just let everyone else do it for me, including The Flash who said,

"So... is she turning into a clone of Karen?"

"No. Karen's DNA already merged with Scott's to create a new body. Scott acquired many similarities to Karen but it resulted in something new, hence the blonde hair." Diana listened to Bruce's answer and it made her curious so she asked,

"Why did it turn him into a woman?" Bruce quickly responded with,

"Karen's DNA merging with Scott's needed to make him compatible so it reversed his chromasomes allowing his body to surge with estrogen, resulting in what you are seeing now." I finally managed to bring myself to speak,

"...Is there a cure?" Finally I was able to see that Batman wasn't being cruel, he was being stoic to keep things under control especially when I heard him speak to me with a more somber tone,

"...I can try."
