I've seen one of these. They are called like tabby tigers or strawberry tabby tigers.they are a real beauty.

Just when you think you've seen true beauty, something like this comes around and give you a slap across the face everytime. Nothing man-made can ever compare to the beauty of gorgeous animals.

Aw. Almost like my little kitty... the color and everything but size.

I love golden tabbies and whites and never understood the controversy behind them. Sometimes I get criticized for having a female white tiger as the protagonist of my comic.

In any case, she's gorgeous very fluffy here. A suicidal tendency of mine is to want to hug adorable big cats like this lady though self preservation gets the better of me.

They're pretty, yeah I'm not even sure how golden tabbies came about in captivity, though they supposedly existed in the wild in the early parts of the 20th century (white tigers definitely did). The issue with white tigers is what people did to breed them and some still do (breeding closely related white animals). It's unconscionable now, though I worked with three white tigers that were born to two unrelated orange cats who carried the recessive gene.

This is so cool! What kind of tiger is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fennecx In reply to Chibi-Pineapple [2011-07-07 18:32:42 +0000 UTC]

A golden tabby Bengal tiger. Supposedly they were found in the wild up until the early part of the 20th century.

Gorgeous photo. Sad to hear that it's from Six Flags though. I've heard quite a few nasty things about them as far as animals go...

Yeeeah, I didn't realize you worked there, until after I looked at some of your other photos and comments. Once I found out, I was like "Oh wow, that's going to bite me in the butt".

I'm not saying you specifically abuse the animals. From what I've seen in the photos, you take good care of them.

What I've heard about Six Flags is that they give many of the animals small enclosures and put them really close to the loud rides. However, I have mostly heard that about Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and not as much from the other ones. I apologize if I made a big generalization for the parks.

fennecx In reply to phantompanther [2009-03-11 18:49:32 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I've seen you have photos of Sea World and Siegfried and Roy's animals as well... both are quite open for criticism, but I'd be careful about doing so without seeing them both. I won't get too far into this besides saying our park is different and the specific tiger program I work with is different and essentially has no relation to any other. As you may be able to see our cats have large enclosures, we play with them often, interact with them affectionately, give them a lot of enrichment, and train them using operant conditioning. If you're ever on the east coast I'd suggest coming and seeing it for yourself.

phantompanther In reply to fennecx [2009-03-11 21:09:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, okay. I'm actually quite interested in seeing the tiger show!

Yeah, I'm a bit iffy on Sea World and Siegfried and Roy's animals too, honestly. I think my biggest concern about Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is that they have the animals REALLY close to very loud rides. That's...kind of poor planning, I think. Siegfried and Roy seem to have their animals put in an area that's a bit more quiet. Then again, their shows seem pretty loud... From what I can tell, Sea World seems to be pretty good at keeping the animals away from the major rides. I could be wrong though. I haven't studied every square inch of the parks.

Just to be clear, I am not totally against animals in captivity. I just prefer for them to be taken care of properly. I made that comment before I saw your other pictures, so I had no idea what the circumstance was. I thought you just managed to get a really nice shot of the tiger through glass and that we weren't getting the "whole picture" of how they are kept. After seeing the pictures of them playing, I'd say that it seems a lot better than I thought. At least, for your branch of Six Flags. It's nice to see your point of view though, because so far I have mostly only really seen negative things about Six Flags ( specifically Discovery Kingdom ).

While I can't say that I am completely okay with Discovery Kingdom at this point, I can tell that you are taking care of the tigers as best as you guys can at your park. It's nice to see you playing with them and feeding them from a bottle. I'm sure you already know this, but I would like for you to be careful. I wouldn't want anything to happen to you. Because even though I like animals, I am aware that they can be very dangerous.

Thanks for all of the lovely pictures! Because you work there, you have the opportunity to take photos that most of us can't and I really enjoy viewing them.

I know people who have worked or do work at each and I personally have visited and been behind the scenes at each besides the Mirage. Discovery Kingdom's animal areas and shows were built first, the rides were inserted after Six Flags bought the park. It's unfortunate for a couple of the areas (the Bird Show at this point, for instance). But, they do the best they can. In general, the tigers I work with are somewhat surrounded by coasters and we do a pretty loud show... I have a good idea of what bothers our cats, and while I can see anthropomorphically what factors may seem to annoy animals: the rides and music in our show do not. They are pretty much completely desensitized to them.
