Honestly, I don't see why some people hate Hal/Tighten. He's a more realistic take on how most people would react if they got super-powers. Most would abused them like mad. I know I'd try to right some wrongs in my life if I suddenly obtained powers. Does that make me evil? I certainly hope not! :/
