Description
Dragons are one of my favorite fantasy creatures, they come in many shapes and sizes and inspire many ideas that I'd like to try in the future. They are also great for practice drawings like this one. Here my focus was on coloring and lighting. The pose came out a bit funny, it looks like this dragon probably would like to be depicted on a coat of arms.

Originally created by a long forgotten wizard, spearmane dragons were meant to be guardians for a cave full of rare crystals valued for their magical properties. The crystals' magical aura influenced their mental developement, making once simple animalistic beings sapient. Grieving every loss of a dear friend that was slain by crystal seekers, the dragons came to value life and see futility of greed-driven conflict. These dragons no longer wanted to be mindless servants, eventually they left the cave and sought refuge at the mountains. A few of them outlived their creator and remain alive to this day.

Despite the frightening appearance that was deliberately given to them, spearmanes' demeanor is calm and peaceful. In fact, conflict avoidance made it possible for them to survive for such a long time. Spearmane dragons are genderless, without any reproductive system, so the ones that are still alive are to remain the only dragons of their type. Their peaceful community and the vast knowledge gained throughout the centuries are doomed to fade as many locals come to hunt them down, seeking pelts, bones, teeth and claws that artisans could turn into powerful artifacts.
