Description Aaaaah, Caitlin.

This is the idea I had for the chain sketch of "my favourite character". I tried to draw this, didn't work out. Rubbed it and just did a sketch to loosen up. I liked that sketch enough to upload it as the chain sketch.

Which freed this up. My art-trades done, I got no commissions, no other art projects. So I drew this. There's a somewhat interesting tale of how this all came to be (somewhat interesting in that it probably only interests me), and it went a lot further and became more complete than I expected.

I'm actually a little proud of myself. It's not... the bestest thing ever drawn, but it might be the best thing I've ever drawn.

Anyhow. Muscle woman. Has the personality of a woman. Doing a mundane thing. With no sexual overtones at all.

So it's obviously a "Fett" piece. Which means precisely four people will like it, other artists can shake their heads as I keep aping Mr Hughes, and the femuscle community at large can ignore it because it's not a masturbatory aid.

But I don't care.

I've spent the last two days hanging out with Caitlin Fairchild and I feel grand.

Enjoy, friends. ^___^

Update: For my 30th, did a commission that's kinda a continuation over here: [link]

Very insightful comment, Fett. I thought that Caitlin's Gift was pretty good indication of your preferences, and I got to work with you on the Akiko commission so I had some knowledge of your artistic process. But I didn't realize what an ordeal it is for you to create artwork. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I commission you...

Thanks, but it's NOT always like that. This was a particularly profound exception for myself, so I thought I'd share it.

Basically, the two best things I've ever done is this pic and the "Ness portrait" pic that's my avatar. The avatar pic I did in less than an hour out of the blue. Just happened. This one was therapy. So 'next time' might be neither...

Imagine me starving and begging for scraps.

No! Wait. Fuck that. Imagine me built like Arnie (but with devilish handsomeness) and fanoodling with Caitlin Fairchild.

On big piles of money.

In my own private jet.

Which is landing on my private island.

Wow Fett...I didn't know this one piece in particular took you on such an emotional adventure, though I suppose that's why she's hitchhiking right?

You dirty fiend, the car breaking down was a ploy, wasn't it! You just wanted to spend more time with Caitlin!

I don't blame you though, and I think this is very interesting. Thanks a lot for sharing, I hope I experience something similar sometime.

Too bad she is never drawn quite that fit in the comic. She actually looks like she should be super strong here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fettcom In reply to DocWolph [2008-08-11 23:50:37 +0000 UTC]

I actually don't think I've drawn her too big compared to the way Adam Hughes and Adam Warren have drawn her. I think I pronounced her bicep too much which makes it look bigger, but I don't think, proportionally, I've made her much bigger than those guys did.

DocWolph In reply to Fettcom [2008-08-12 00:18:55 +0000 UTC]

From my observation, very few artists just go ahead an make a properly realized muscular woman. Usually they will make the girl or woman much more defined but not big, like a FBB.

While I know they are trying to avoid making the female in question look "manly", but they should feel obliged to take license with that and keep the cute, beautiful, and/or attractive face. I mean this is fantasy, so why not.

It would be like saying you want this actress' head on this FBB's body. Besides getting their powers from magic (Wonder Woman), some form of nuclear power (the only plausible excuse for She-hulk), or alien genetics (Ms. Marvel, Supergirl, etc.), most of these super woman should have some real muscle, such they look "super" not merely exceptionally fit. Most of these super woman in comics look like how some of the fighter females should look like.

I'm not saying ultra huge, like many of us tend to draw, just looking the role.

Fettcom In reply to DocWolph [2008-08-14 00:30:36 +0000 UTC]

As you say, some women need to look buff and others don't. Wonder Woman, even though she's magically super strong, should still look buff as hell because she's the greatest warrior. She's the Batman of the Amazons.

I'm one of those people that think muscle is like a hairstyle - some women carry it well, others don't. I think personality has more to do with sexiness than any one physical trait.

There's more to characters than just how they look. No other comic book superheroine would ever strike this pose. To me, that's the magic. Her being big or not... it's kind of an afterthought. Her sitting like that, her looking at you like that... that makes her Caitlin. Too big, too small - that can be forgiven.

Imperfections in the art are proportionately ignored/forgiven depending on the emotional impact they have.

Caitlin is one of these characters who, despite being an uberbabe, you can draw without having to try to make her look sexy because there's so much more there. I see people drawing Caitlin in these sexy poses lifting cars or looking like a lingerie model and I can't help but think, "There's more to her than that."

I don't think this picture is the best Caitlin picture ever, but I really think it's *Caitlin*. It couldn't be anyone else.

So I forgive myself the over-pronounced bicep, just as I'd forgive another artist who captured her well if he drew her small.

DocWolph In reply to Fettcom [2008-08-14 00:54:39 +0000 UTC]

If by "over-pronounced" Bicep you me too defined, then maybe for that situation. She is looking more or less like she is not trying to espouse any of her strength. Though Caitlin has been shown to workout now and then, though certainly not enough to warrant more than a trim physique.

My core argument is more about how super-strong females rarely look the part, especially when called for. Drawing a character too big or too small is not really my concern but to represent the character in a manner more consistent to that character's role. Again, some characters, mostly female characters, could stand to be in a figure other than the "size-zero" bikini model mode.

I'm going to take a bit of a recant and say more females could stand to be more natural in appearance. Some could be heavier, even to go to decidedly fat, while others could be thin, lanky, to stereotypically "beautiful" and athletic to downright musclebound as to look like she really could take a hard punch from the HULK and not get knocked over or out.

Maybe I'm just advocating more variety in how females are portrayed in comics. The way it has been for so long, most of the superheroines look like the same two or three women in different tights and hairdo. Heck, they are mostly all the same height an bra cup size too. I find it more than a little boring and is one of hte reasons I draw muscle, I suppose.
