Description
k, hope this is the right category theres no textiles in this thing, but some wood, leather, bolts, metal, and micellany, and is part of costuming..Anywhoo, this is the current state of the stabbity dagger& bracer for the Altair cosplay i'm working on.. still got refining to do XD
theres a couple of kinks to work out of it, and I gotta finish mechanizing it.. I haven't decided on spring of gear power, but in the meantime until i put guts into the thing, its currently gravity fed, in case i don't have time to finish.
The tough part is getting the mechanism packed into such a compact space, as this things maybe 1 5/8 inches wide, tops, and most of the space is occupied by the blade segments. gonna have to custom build all the little bits so they'll fit. how irritating.
I really liked the whole moving faceplate thing, so i incorporated that into the system
the 5 armor segments are made of leather with coats of black and silver paint, as i have no means or desire to make them out of metal. got to speak to an awesome gentleman (and fellow altair cosplayer) who was more familiar with historical info and mentioned that most likely the plates were leather anyways, so yeah. thats my excuse & i'm sticking to it.. will do a fe wmore black washes to tone down some areas and like, add a lil more character.
anywhoo, the right pics are the plates, some are curved and shaped to the bracer, others aren't... the extra lil' bits on the top are to support the overlap and provide a space on either side to slide the straps into.
The pics on the left are of the bracer assembly, top left are the plates damped and shaped to the bracer, and rubber banded on til they dry. they'll be nailed onto the bracer when all is said & done
the other two are of course, the stabbity

AHhh! They're called Lazy tongs???? hell, I didn't even know there was a name lol.. yeah, i implemented that, and while its viable, i was using aluminum, and they couldn't take the abuse (and got caught in the slide).. I DO want to return to the concept though for the ac2 daggers though.
a wip of that is in one of my old wip compilations ^^ [link]
was talking to someone at a replica shop regarding gamblers holdouts a while back, and they had stopped making them, because people were rigging them with knives.. similar concept to the lazy tong though, but i really want to make it self contained to the dagger casing and ring. (need to put a lock on it to, would hate for it to spring out)

I can't believe I never added this one to my fav's before. It's been my biggest inspiration when making my own bracers for the LARP hidden-blade after all.
It's an outstanding piece of work. The leatherwork is magnificent and the blade is quite a sight to see.
I'm wondering though, what did you use to give the leather plates on top that metallic look?

Yep, other than what you pointed out, all that needs done is for you to cut of your ring finger.

that thing looks really solid; like you can actually stab someone with it and it would not move or slide up or down your arm. GJ

Dude! At firs I thougt that those armor segments are metal! Great Job, dude! But i think the hidden blade "box" is a little bit too big. Or maybe it just seems like that.
YOU MEAN THAT UOU WILL HAVE FULLY FUNCTIONAL SPRING SYSTEM?! OMG, OWNED. I respect people who know how to pack all those things into small "boxes". Awesome.

yeah,. its about 3/16th inch taller than it should be, but about 1/4 inch thinger than it should be (widthwise). Thinking of restructuring the underside a lil, but it would be more to accomodate a bit of a pulley system than to actually reduce thickness...
but yeah! that stinkin' case doesn't allow for much wiggle room, with a full length shaft and a dagger in there, and been having to make everything "mini" but still make sure its got to power to move that main plate & dagger (which has been the main challenge! )
since integrated a spring & a scissor hinge into it, but need to finish connecting the extendible dagger (it basically needs a pulley to extend & retract it, and a lock XD ) then should be all set

that's really good, I wish I had one DX
only complaint is that it looks a little bulky, but honestly it doesn't really matter ^^
great job!

Goddamn it! Will you people stop raising the bar! I'm already using an 18 foot vaulting pole.
If you want to try metal use copper sheeting. You can shape it with hand tools. Many craft stores carry them. Still for leather this is amazing.

Impressive. Still, if you had made the plates out of metal, it would look much better.

what would be much better would be if -you- made them out of metal and showed me how cool they are, seeing as you work with metal.
i don't have the facilities, nor interest in doing so.

I don't have the facilities either. All I've got is a deck.
All you'd need to make the plates yourself, since you're making a prop, is a hammer, flat-head screwdriver, some thin guage sheet steel, and some wood to hammer the shape out on.

these "thats cool, but what would REALLY be cool" comments really cheese me off because noone ever goes to take the time to do it themselves and show me how cool things would be.
I like my plates the way they are. i'll take your advice into consideration for future projects.
