Description k, hope this is the right category theres no textiles in this thing, but some wood, leather, bolts, metal, and micellany, and is part of costuming..

Anywhoo, this is the current state of the stabbity dagger& bracer for the Altair cosplay i'm working on.. still got refining to do XD

theres a couple of kinks to work out of it, and I gotta finish mechanizing it.. I haven't decided on spring of gear power, but in the meantime until i put guts into the thing, its currently gravity fed, in case i don't have time to finish.

The tough part is getting the mechanism packed into such a compact space, as this things maybe 1 5/8 inches wide, tops, and most of the space is occupied by the blade segments. gonna have to custom build all the little bits so they'll fit. how irritating.

I really liked the whole moving faceplate thing, so i incorporated that into the system

the 5 armor segments are made of leather with coats of black and silver paint, as i have no means or desire to make them out of metal. got to speak to an awesome gentleman (and fellow altair cosplayer) who was more familiar with historical info and mentioned that most likely the plates were leather anyways, so yeah. thats my excuse & i'm sticking to it.. will do a fe wmore black washes to tone down some areas and like, add a lil more character.

anywhoo, the right pics are the plates, some are curved and shaped to the bracer, others aren't... the extra lil' bits on the top are to support the overlap and provide a space on either side to slide the straps into.

The pics on the left are of the bracer assembly, top left are the plates damped and shaped to the bracer, and rubber banded on til they dry. they'll be nailed onto the bracer when all is said & done I hope they dry soon so i can take it off. i'm tired and really don't wanna go to sleep wearing this thing

the other two are of course, the stabbity .

Whew! That's pretty damn amazing.

Perhaps with the spring mechanism, you could attach some sort of strong string or plastic-coated wiring that you could use to pull it back in.

All you'd have to do is (somehow) feed the pulling string from the bottom of the blade and out the back of the box, and then make it pretty taut and attached to an undershirt, so that when you stretched out your arm, it would pull the blade back in.

But then you'd have to have a pretty weak spring.

...complicated!!

wow...I'm still impressed by this. It's coming out quite quite well, yo.

As for the springs vs gears...springs would be easier to make things go stabbity, but harder to make it go back in. Any chance of an electric circuit hooked up to a button in the palm? Could be hooked up to a gear system lining the "holster;" the problem I see is that it may not be exactly quick, unless you have a bigger motor, which would be kinda hard to put in there.

Dammit, if a buncha Muslims in the 15th century figured it out, you'd think we'd be able to...XD

fevereon In reply to Kal-aMari [2008-09-08 03:16:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to make it so the spring launches it out, then a miniature gear/pulley set to retract it.. the retraction will be slow as in the game, but its the launching of thing that I want nice n fast (though of course, non lethal, so i'm using a VERY lightweight spring)

the thought of electronic system crossed my mind for about 3 seconds, which got quickly stfu'ed by the fact that i have no knowledge of electronics, and haven't time to crash course on it XD

poop. need to remember to put a lock on it. it just slid out and poked my monitor when i was typing would hate to have it -launch- into my monitor ><

Kal-aMari In reply to fevereon [2008-09-08 03:50:58 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i was worried about the lock. Gears would mean that it doesn't need a lock, as long as the motor holds.

hmm...if you got someone to take apart a printer's movement system, you could use that. Depends on if you know any electrical engineers.

I have not personally played Assassin's Creed, merely seen it in action. So I haven't actually had a good look at the mechanism as it springs.

If retraction were manual, it'd make things quite a bit easier. But if you want it to retract automatically, too, you'd probably need that electrical engineer.

The electrical system would be a rather simple one, at least. Two wires hooked up to the motor, with the switch. I wonder if I could draw a simple diagram...

dammit, almost makes me wish I were an electrical engineer. XD

right now, i'm aiming to keep the 20th century technology (ie electronics) out of the mix. Purely manual baby

But i got something figured out. Time is the only factor, as i gotta knock out two commissions and prepare for AWA in the next week

watch this space (Will be posting a update on the bracer itself, as current state of the bracer has been assembled and such now
