Watching the tapes became a habit Carmilla had grown to enjoy. Maybe because of the way Laura’s face lit up every time she came back from the second floor with snacks; or how Laura sometimes fell asleep on her shoulder and then woke up, startled, with cheeks glowing red, awkwardly pretending she hadn’t just been nuzzled against Carmilla’s neck.
As they settled for another late night, Carmilla pulled out a brand new pack of chocolate chip cookies from her bag and handed it to Laura, who immediately dug into it.
“You’d think I’d get tired of these,” she said while chewing. “But you’d be wrong.”
Carmilla smiled. “Color me surprised.”
She sat down next to Laura, accidentally shoulder-bumping her with a smile. It almost felt normal.
With her free hand, Laura grabbed the blanket sitting on her lap and gestured for Carmilla to scoot closer, and then wrapped it around the both of them when she did. The room’s sole source of light were the candles Carm had lit and placed as further away from any books as she could (after a little incident involving a very clumsy Lafontaine), and low atmosphere actually contributed to their VHS viewing experience. That, and Carmilla had fallen in love with the way the light reflected on Laura’s brown eyes.
She caught herself staring into them as Laura enjoyed her much needed snack, and was quick to advert her gaze down to Laura’s mouth when their eyes nearly met, noticing crumbs lodged between the right corner of her lips. Carmilla snickered.
“You’ve got something-“ She instinctively cupped Laura’s cheek and led her thumb to the crumbs before pausing; looking up.
Wide eyes stared silently back at her. Carmilla remembered Christmas and gingerbread and a tissue on Laura’s hand. She remembered a smile flashing across Laura’s lips and how she wiped the corner of her mouth, gently and with so much warmth. She remembered the closeness, and how all she wanted was to wrap her arms around her love and shelter her from all the bad in the world.
Carmilla remembered the love she felt that day and realised she had yet to stop feeling it.
Her thumb found the corner of Laura’s lips and she slowly swiped at the bits of cookie, lingering when she reached the centre of her mouth.
Laura’s breath hitched and every obstacle between them suddenly faded into distant whispers she could barely hear; all she could think was how much she longed for that proximity and how much she missed the warmth of Carmilla’s touch.
But they couldn’t.
Carmilla’s thumb slid down from her lips and Laura missed it instantly. The hand on her cheek left and landed on a lap that was not hers. She felt the cold wave of reality rushing back to her.
Carmilla was not hers. And that hand was not hers. And that finger was not hers.
And they just couldn’t.
Not yet.
