BTW, you probably know that the M60 was the weapon that the STAR WARS "laser guns" were patterned after. I jumped when I saw the Storm Troopers carrying the matte black "M60s". They were cast in a plastic/rubber/vinyl material. It would've been a chore to carry for a movie character, since a real M60Β weighed over 23 lbs.

See illus. "60 and 16" above. That M16 next to the M60 is a later model than the A1. Early 16s had a differently shaped flash suppressor. It was triangular and open on the muzzle, so it was sort of fork-like. It was later redesigned as the open fork could catch or snag on branches, vines, etc.

I have heard about it catching the open fork things like that

Two good looking guns that are still in use today. Not bad, considering both were designed in the 1950's.

Amazing how some military equipment can last so long

Mostly because of the Ordnance Corp. blocks any attempts to replace them.

I think a big thing is cost. Though the M60 was essentially replaced long ago by FN MGs.Β

Yeah, the FN MAG and the FN Minimi, or M240 and M249 respectively.
