Between antiquity and medieval i say that those were "Real Horror Stories" , I mean just imagine so many kingdoms with plagues,wars,religious wars even ... not to mention the capital punishments in France,German-Roman Empire,England etc . Sadly I hardly remember the hard-level part of that times history but elemental (life,food,army,politics,religion) I remember quite well but the big part where we can know besides Armies armed with deadly blades are the tortures they made on prisoners,witches,heretics and others .

One thing I find it hard to swallow on Medieval history it is about Religion wars . Why would mankind these days fight for their own religion just like back in 1618-1648, In France etc when every Christian cult worships the same people ?
