Being a replica though I wouldn't have been surprised if it had a V6 diesel sitting in there or even a inline 4 cylinder, say like one from a Ford Transit. The railcar at Embsay was originally petrol and they have gone for diesel engine due to much better torque and makes it better for hill climbing

A lot of rail lines in America that were going into bankruptcy used them to try and keep the company solvent. But this doodle bugs (a term used in America for these contraptions) could only keep the company afloat for so long.
