Description

2637: After the evacuation of Earth, Victor von Barrinstine is forced to leave his family estate. Having lost most of his possessions, staff, and dignity, he and a few servants seek refuge on Cruix.

“I'm sorry about this hotel sir, just... Try to get some sleep, okay?”

The tiny room was indeed a change from his cavernous mansion. Victor didn't know what was more heartbreaking: the fact that this shoddy hotel was the only place available, or that everything he had left in the world was able to easily fit within the room's walls.

His MED, Lady, lay beside him, her furry warmth a surprising comfort. She was usually not allowed to sleep in her master's bed, but Victor was too drained to even consider upholding that usual rule. An occasional flutter near his head suggested that Skylar was sitting nearby and – despite his typical exasperation at the girl's often foolish devotion – Victor was thankful that she was with him.

Leaving Earth had not been easy. His whole fortune was in the Barrinstine estate, everything his ancestors had worked for, the very thing that made him who he was. He'd already disappointed his late mother by being born a boy, and now he'd lost her home... No, now was not the time to think of such things.

He rolled onto one side, unable to sleep despite the exhaustion that clung to his eyes.

“Skylar?” he whispered, unaware that his voice was going to come out sounding so weak and pitiful. Part of him hoped the Drannd was asleep. Upon hearing her voice, however, he felt slightly less tense than normal. He swallowed around the dryness in his mouth, feeling more than a little sorry for himself.

“Please don't leave me.”

In the morning he would find an excuse for what he said. He'd blame it on the stress of the evacuation, jet-lag maybe, certainly nothing sincere. But for now... He sighed quietly, eyes closing as he felt a tentative hand run gently over his hair, and soft words assure him that no, she wasn't going anywhere, everything would be okay.

And just for a moment, before slipping into an unsatisfying, restless sleep, he believed her.
