My newest pet for Subeta - the Xotl (pronounced Zoh-tul). I like to fill the gaps in our pet species when I'm looking for something new to draw, and we were definitely low on amphibian/small reptile!The xotl is a mixture of frog/tree frog/gecko/axolotl/snake and chameleon...maybe a few other things! I just knew I wanted to make something original out of a several different species, and after a few months of sketching I came up with an early version of this guy. Definitely happy with the user response, you Subeta users do rock xD

Yeah, the faces on these are something I'm really happy with. I seem to be able to work them into all kinds of expressions whilst retaining the design! Which I hope remains recognisable xD

Aah, I love these so much, and even more when I can see the lovely full view! So beautiful ;; Gah. You might've already seen my flailing rambling comment in the news, but I thought I ought to leave another comment here, haha. I apologize if this comes out as a wall of text, I'm... rather long-winded at times. XD
I super love how these are such a nice blend of several different creatures, and blended together so well. They just... work. Honestly, even if they're drawn in a cartoony style, the way you've handled them makes them look like something I wouldn't be surprised to see IRL. I lovelove their eyes, how they're, er, not just normal little generic anime/Disney eyes but actual... animal-y ones, and they have the cutest mouths, and those little... fin things are just adorable. But most of all, I love the cheek spot. Oh my gosh it's just the best touch. It's so cute and just... adds so much!
I was a little thrown off by the lack of tail at first, but the more I looked at it the more I realized that these things do not need a tail. At all. Actually it's a really nice change, since most pets on Subeta (and virtual pets in general) have a tail, and it makes them look less... generic! Very cool. The anatomy is really well-done. Must've been tricky to do. xD I love the ridge on the back!
As much as I love preeeetty much everything, my favorite thing about them is the colors. The colors are just... gorgeous. Every different xotl is absolutely beautiful. I really love how some of them go a bit outside the norm for the color, like the twilight being black/gold and the dusk's lovely red and the field in general. It adds such a unique touch to the xotl, really sets them apart from the other pets on Subeta even further than their unique design already did, and it looks gorgeous.
The common one is just to die for. I'm not normally much for froglike things, but I just now morphed one of my pets into one because the colors are so pretty. xD Really excellent color choice with the orange and blue; usually that color scheme grates on my nerves but it's just perfect here!
And finally... I'm really in awe of the way you do the shading and texturing. Like, really seriously in awe. It's very impressive, and I adore how subtle it is, how you don't go overboard but get just the right balance of detail and simplicity! If you don't mind, I had a question, haha. When you do this kind of cell-shaded art, do you shade with multiply layers, or do you do it in the more old-fashioned way? x)

I've seen each of the comments you've left on this, and they have honestly been the best comments I have received in a long time - I got quite emotionally happy over them! So much so that I've never quite been sure how to reply to them with the right words!
So I've left the message here in my inbox for way too long and today I just had to get /something/ out. So thank you, so much, for taking the time to leave this much feedback. This is why I love doing what I do. Every once in a while somebody like you comes along and just makes me feel like I'm doing something right.
And to answer your question, yes I do shade with multiply layers, but each colour has it's own set of two shading layers and a highlight (at the very least). So what I'll do is just have the whole thing in one colour to begin with, and shade it completely. I then just duplicate the shading layers and create clipping masks over the other colours and markings - so I get the exact same shading everywhere, but can adjust the strength of it in the darker/lighter areas. Which may not make much sense but that's what I do!

I try to express what I like about the site whenever I have.. some level of eloquence, heh, because I really love everything all you staff members do and I want to try to show my appreciation. Names sometimes just come to me - I was looking for a name that began with a letter that wasn't already being used by another pet, and I really liked the idea of a name beginning with X. Then it just kind of happened!

I love you for creating a pet so different than the ones we have, like you said, filling the gaps.

I love their patterns, and this is one of the few pets where I like the base color scheme better than the special colors haha.

Haha, I am a bit of a fan of orange and blue! The manchu is also orange and blue, but I wasn't quite as into colours as I am now so it wasn't quite as rich looking c:

I gotta admit, when I first saw this on Subeta's news page, I was a little iffy. I was immediately drawn to Common's colors, and of course thought the art was amazing, but the pet itself?
Then after staring at it for a minute or two all I could think was, "Aww!" and now I've fallen in love with it. Had I any slots/a suitable pet to change, I probably would already have one!
If I had to choose one thing I really, really liked, I'd say the eyes. But I do really like the whole thing (and odd as it may sound, especially the neck/belly shading, to the point where I keep admiring it).
I'm looking forward to the reposes.

Awww, thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I must admit, I do like when at first I don't love a pet, but then I see something special about it and then I grow to love it so much more because of the initial flaw? I have a few pets like that that I originally disliked.

It took me a moment to see where the snake influence was, until I saw the Sun version. It looks like my cornsnake, Ruby. Very cute and a job well done.

I did try to base as many of the colours on existing poison dart/other frogs as I could! Field is the most obvious, the Green Tree Frog is where I got my inspiration for that one. Yay, I love Wish! I'm glad to have helped you out with a species choice
