"Mey-Rin, you should get up now."
"Oh, oh yeesss..." She stretched her arms under her covers, and I finally thought that today was going to be the day she actually got out of bed when I tried to wake her. But then she curled over on her other side, facing away from me in the single bed, and continued snoring.
"Mey-Rin, it's only an hour before you have to get up anyway!" I hissed at her in a whisper. "We can begin work early, and then maybe Sebastian will give us a longer lunch break!"
The only response I received was a low snore. Hm.
"...Alright, I'll get you up in an hour, ok?" She let out some sort of mumbly words that I'm pretty sure weren't of the English language. So I slipped off her bed and crossed the room to the door that led to my room next door. Once inside, I began changing into my everyday work outfit, checking my hair in the mirror using the still bright moonlight before stepping out of the door that led to the hallway. The only light was the small circles every few feet down the high-ceiling hall coming from the dim little candles on the walls in between each door on both sides. Mey-Rin's room was right at the end of the hallway, and mine was right after hers. I decided that I'd pull the drapes on all the windows first. Mine was already done, and Mey-Rin... Well let's just leave her be for right now.
I first did the window at our end of the hallway. The removed drapes revealed the tall, thin window with the most perfect view of the disappearing stars. It's beautiful. Sometimes I go out for walks by myself at night, because it's just the most beautiful time of each day. Insomnia has its perks.
By the time I worked my way from the top of the mansion to the bottom pulling the curtains, the stars had completely disappeared but there was no sign of the sun. I thought about waking Mey-Rin now, but there were still a few minutes left before she had to get up. I'm sure Sebastian is up already, doing who knows what. Bard will be up in a few minutes to make food for everyone. Just thinking of him caused my face to heat up. Hm... Bard is always the one making food. Maybe it would be nice for someone to make something for him this time instead.
So I made my way quietly across the large open room, past the front door to the left where the kitchen was. Hopefully I can make something quick before he wakes up. What should it be... Ah! How about that new recipe for pancakes that Mr. Howsham gave me? And some scrambled eggs, some orange juice... That reminds me, I have to go shopping for some today...
With a thousand things running through my mind I quickly began to create my small masterpiece. Add some flour, some eggs, oil, a few drops of honey, milk, butter... As I put them on the stove at a low tempurature, I crossed to the icebox to grab two eggs and prepared them in a small bowl on the counter. Bard doesn't like pepper, I remember. So instead I added some salt and just a bit of garlic to the milk and whipped eggs. Then I took out a small but deep pan from the cabinet below the counter and set it on the stove, poured some oil in it to grease the pan, and then let the eggs fry for a bit. Flipped a few pancakes, scrambled the eggs, turn off the stoves and put everything on a nice little plate, get some orange juice... voila! I looked down at my creation happily. It looks so good! I hope he likes it.
I took the pans off the stove and over to the deep sink. Time to clean up. Pulling my sleeves back to keep them clean, I turned the water on and began scrubbing the pans with a rag and some soap. The sun's first rays were just peeping out in the distance, illuminating the front yard beautifully. I sighed with content at the sight through the large window as I dried the pans. Today will be great. I don't usually like the sun so much, but today it seems calmer, soothing.
"What's this?"
I turned around to see Bard staring down at the food, the cigarette in his mouth as usual. His spiky blonde hair still had some bedhead in it, but he seemed wide awake now as he stared down in surprise at the food.
"Well you're always making food for everyone else early in the morning," I started, suddenly kind of nervous, "so I thought I'd make you some today." I was kind of embarrassed... They're just some silly pancakes and eggs, and he can make stuff so much better. Maybe it would have been easier and more enjoyable for him to make something himself. "If you don't want them I can eat them, or give them to Mey-Rin-"
"Of course I'm eatin' 'em!" A smile had cracked on his face as he took up the fork in his big, wide hand. "It was real thoughtful of you to make this for me! And-" he took a huge bite of pancake and closed his eyes as he chewed, sighing with what I'm hoping was happiness, "der boody denishus!"
I giggled at his mouth full of pancakes, relieved that he liked them. "I'm glad you're enjoying it," I said through giggles. "I can do this every morning if you'd like, as I'm up anyway and don't have much else to do yet so early in the- AH!"
He'd practically jumped to me and squeezed the air out of me in a big hug that lifted me off the ground. "I'd completely love that!" he exclaimed into my ear as he swung us around in circles. When he set me down I realized I was blushing, and he was too, although I don't think he cared as much. Because then he leaned down and gave me a quick peck on the cheek. "Thank you so much."
I just stood there in frozen shock, trying to comprehend what had just happened. But it wasn't until I'd made my way out of the kitchen, tomato-red and muttering excuses about having to go wake Mey-Rin, looking anywhere but at Bard's embarrassed and flushed face, that I could finally enjoy it.
"Mey-Rin!" I called out in a singsong voice as I burst through her door. I'd been skipping up the stairs and through the hallway to her room, a goofy grin on my face the whole time. She was still curled up in her covers when I pulled the drapes to her small window and jumped on top of her.
"OW!" She pulled her sheets back and gave me an angry look, until she saw my face. "What's got into you? Why, you're as jumpy as a kangaroo this mornin'!"
I giggled and pulled her out of the bed. "Just a good day, I guess!"
