Raphael has absolutely no time for anything that doesn't interest him. He lives life fast and would rather die young than live long and it be boring.
Unfortunately, this code doesn't exactly boost his zombie-apocalypse-suitability odds. Not that it matters to Raphael, though, as long as he's having a good time, he doesn't care.

Backstory
Tragedy struck for the first time within the Rosales household when Rafael was a little boy- whilst he was at daycare, his parents and brother were involved in a road accident. His sibling survived the crash, but his mother and father were not so fortunate. The two brothers promptly settled in with his grandfather; a well-off widow, the man supplied his grandchildren with a seemingly appropriate upbringing. Noticing the artistic skill Rafael possessed from a young age, the man helped foster and grow his abilities. A craftsman by trade, he would spend many evenings whittling away with Rafael late into the night.
This silent bond marked a significant majority of their relationship- his grandfather was never much of an affectionate man, and with him carried a bitterness that made it hard to get along with him. He was always a little standoffish, but the loss of both his wife and son only amplified this brooding resentment of the world. But, in those quiet moments, side-by-side as they wordlessly crafted, Rafael felt as if his grandfather did love him. Perhaps in the only way he could.

... Rafael thinks that his brother got it from their mother; she was an orphan, and her circumstances caused her medical information to come out bare. Perhaps that's another reason why the genetic disease that took his eldest brother's life took so long to be noticed- not that it would have mattered, anyway. The murmurs of the doctors said something of it being Huntington's; something of it being incurable. Fatal. It was hard to watch his brother fade away; harder to do so with a seemingly apathetic caretaker. Rafael told himself again that his grandfather did care, he just was afraid to show it- a brief flash of melancholy passed through his eyes when he heard the diagnosis, a fleeting second of feeling before the older man steeled his gaze. At the funeral, he let the boy cry into his shirt, but didn't speak a word. After that, Rafael would begin to rebel and act up- get into fights at school, vandalise and trespass property. He thinks his tag is on just about every train in Los Muertos. Maybe he just wanted to see his grandfather snap, wanted to see him care about something, even if it was yelling at him for smashing in someone's windows. He went through juvy for that one; his grandfather didn't seem phased when the police knocked on their door... Much less silent disappointment and more slight irritation that the ordeal inconvenienced him mildly. When he returned home, neither spoke of it.

Years passed; the silence in his home was unbearable- Rafael needed to leave. He took up a part-time job at a make-up store, telling himself the arrangement would be temporary. He was wrong- he adored it. Something clicked in his brain as he feverishly practised and honed his craft; a community college degree later, and Rafael was something of a certified stylist. It was during this time his grandfather and he got into an argument; the old man was always the traditional sort- he didn't like the way Rafael was expressing himself. Didn't like him pursuing his passion... Didn't like his boyfriend. A relationship that was on the rocks, anyway, but something about this being the thing his grandfather got angry about. After everything, this is what he chose to finally express his emotions over. It made Rafael want to fight all the more. A month later he was entirely disowned; living alone after he predictably messed up in his romantic pursuits, Rafael buried himself in his work and momentary happiness. Small pleasures that he left before they could leave him- his attention span for just about everything diminished, save his career.
He needs to experience as much as he can, without much regard for anyone else being hurt by it.

When the apocalypse broke out, he was halfway through a shift- he holed up in the back room with the other workers and patrons, but split off from the group pretty early on. Talk of joining the safety of the hospital bored Rafael, and they all seemed too focused on surviving tomorrow than enjoying today. So, he roams downtown, doing just that.
