Description Process Video on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfKYkO…

This was inspired by WLOP, I love experimenting with different styles and I really wanted to figure out what makes his paintings so good so I tried to come up with my own concept that's inspired by his soft values, shiny elements that draw attention and most importantly the story telling element. Let me know what you think,  I still have some of my own traits applied but I hope it looks good to you. Also I've been having some problems with the gpu drivers or windows 10 for a while now. It messes with the pen pressure and it loses a lot of sensitivity, I am really pissed at windows 10 and the amd drivers. Nothing changes for months and they actually create more problems every update. This is really frustrating and it affects my paintings. I don't know if I can fix this, but I'm never buying an amd gpu again. If you had a similar problem let me know how I can fix it, I remember there was a problem with windows ink and I had to make a text file a while back something with UserStylus 0 written on it or something like that. Let me know if that might be the issue. It a weird issue because its not that noticeable if you don't use your tablet often, but I can definitely feel a difference in the pen pressure and I haven't changed any settings in the Wacom Tablet Properties.

I could see WLOP's influence from the thumbnail alone, I think you did a go approximation while maintaining your own style.

I could recognize the influences immediately too! I think this is really pretty and only critique I could think atm is that for some reason her body looks like she`s just walking? But her hair and necklace imply that she`s actually running...... idk if there`s something u could do better or is it just my weird brain xD And like Suomar said, more contrast etc! :,) Keep up the good work!

I appreciate the feedback, thank you! Its hard to tell for me right now, maybe after I make some improvements I could revisit it and find out what I did wrong.

Lovely picture, and I gotta say I recognized the influences immediately (and not only because of the character similarities!). I've spend quite a lot of time admiring his work also. If you really really want to mimic his style though, I'd advice to be more aggressive with the contrast between light and shadow (he uses a LOT of color dodge tool to make the light parts pop out). You did a great job with the textures, btw and the colors of the dress are really pretty and natural. I'd genuinely love to see a bigger light/shadow contrast between the character in the front and and the background so that the composition would be clearer, I feel like even though it would be a really small fix, it could make a pretty big difference.

Thank you, and yeah that's a good observation, sometimes its harder to mimic an artists work than a photo. Btw I don't really think I was trying to make the painting exactly in his style I just found it difficult to decide what features to keep and what to replace. I really like a lot of things about his style so I thought I would ruin things if I decided to change too much. I usually try keep the influences at minimum or mix in things I like from different artists, but I just had to do this with hope to learn more. Thank you for the tips, I think you're right about the light, its one of those things that if you add the right amount it could look really spectacular and wlop does that very well.

Yeah, it is definitely good to take influence without overdoing it, I often try to do the same! I also looked up the latest video you had uploaded of the new piece, again very wlopish colors and tones, it looked really good btw, great job! Out of curiosity, which other artists do you try to take influence from? I've been really into a lot of Chinese and Russian digital painters lately.

Thanks again, yeah Russian and Chinese artists are usually very skillful. I’ve been influenced by a lot of people, some of my favorites are: Ilya Kuvshinov, guweiz, wlop, Wangjie Li, Irakli Nadar, Nurdzan Bakkalyev, Lane Brown, Yizheng Ke, Vyacheslav Safronov, Snatti and many more that I’m forgetting right now. There’s a lot to learn from many different artists so I’m not too worried that i’ll be unoriginal or anything and when I’m heavily influenced and I’m aware of it, I’d point it out. Do you have any favorite artists?

suomar In reply to FilipJKD [2019-01-12 23:18:06 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, that's a lot of new people to follow! Apart from WLOP and a few others you've mentioned, my favorites right now include Huang Guangjian, Ruan Jia, Wei Feng, Dmitry Prozorov, Christian Angel, Astri-Lohne, Zeen Chin, Craig Mullins, Tatyana Kupriyanova, and the list goes on haha... I find myself liking a certain type of painters more and more with a lot of details yet surprisingly flat colors at times. Haven't managed to paint anything like that myself yet, but I'm definitely aiming to get there. I find that especially Asian painters tend to be very unusual with their color choices and that might be one of the reasons I'm really drawn to them. And you're right - taking influence from a lot of different artists usually results in something quite original, still. Everyone takes influence from one another and there's really nothing wrong with that. I don't know if you've done any digital studies of their work, that's something I still haven't done but probably should do, at least Ruan Jia's style is so distinct I would really like to spend hours and try and copy it at some point.

That's cool I think I've seen works from most of the artists you mentioned. The one that blows my mind is Astri Lohne, so good at such a young age it's crazy. That's what crazy about Guweiz too, they are both close to my age and yet the visual ability they have is unseen. And no I haven't tried to copy any artists work but I've had periods where I'm obsessed with 1 artist and I just try to analyze their works as much as I can. It's been like that for me with Ilya Kuvshinov and Guweiz but since then I haven't really been focusing on just one artist. I like a bunch of artists without putting one on the pedestal or if I do that, I usually move on after a week or two. And yeah I mean you got to take things you like from a lot of artists and that's how your style becomes something that you'd be a fan of yourself. I don't think you'd get too far if you don't try to learn like that and whats unique for everyone is that as an individual no one can copy your life story and how you feel about things, as long as you can find a way to transfer that into the paintings you'll have an unique style

I feel you, I think a lot of people do this with their favorite artists, I know I do! Sometimes it of course increases the "disappointment" I feel when my artwork doesn't look good as the people I look up to, but at least it's very motivational. The age thing is also something that makes me feel quite awful sometimes haha, when they're my age or even younger and way better - although I think it's important to bear in mind that it's not really the age that matters, but the amount of practice you've had. I'm feel like I'm still getting used to the digital medium and some people my age have been doing it for ten years, so it would make no sense to compare really.

All that being said, I'll be curious to see where your style will develop!

Thank you and good luck to you too! Btw I think feeling that you aren't good enough is not a bad thing. It's what drives you to be a better artist. You have to remember that there's nothing much you can do except to keep working and keep improving. Not being better than someone else is okay if you are focusing on getting better than your past self. I think that whats discouraging most people is not being able to do better than someone else instead of noticing that they are getting better than they were.

Awesome painting!
I had the same issue with windows 10 drivers messing up my tablet sensitivity. I did find a fix, I don't recall what it was offhand though. If you are still having problems I can probs figure out what I did. I remember that UserStylus 0 thing too, I had to do that once.

FilipJKD In reply to Rhogg [2019-01-06 15:10:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, It seems to be fine now, but it always comes back and I can't figure out what causes the issue. I know that both the windows 10 updates and amd drivers have been terrible so I assume that its something with them. The wacom drivers are usally good and if they aren't they manage to fix the issue fast. Other than that I use 3 monitors and I mostly use the display toggle on my cintiq so I can paint on the larger screen. One of those things got to be the problem but I don't know which one it is. But I'll worry about that after it starts happening again.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  The key characteristic of WLOP's art (besides the beauty of the images) is that it draws you in and you have to discover the context.  Well done.
