Oddly... just 20 minutes ago I sold an old piece... not as large or as good as yours... but similar in tone and subject matter... and the same anatomical section... itβs very nice (yours). Mine was merely adequate.

That's quite hard to believe, I mean you've been doing art for probably longer than I have been able to hold a pencil and have so much more experience. When I saw your account I wanted to ask you for advice on how to deal with shading and how you go about mixing colour, but didn't want to cluster the note too much with fear of not getting a reply, and I can't tell you how much you surprised me when I saw your comment and the fact that you've replied to me (just noticed that), so thank you for taking the time to reply.

Itβs both.
There are various black dilutions used to get the shades. (Still called βwashβ, as with regular illustration.) But some artists, particularly those who are accustomed to non-tattoo art, (me, for instance) will sketch away with pure black to get a similar effect.
