You know, it is known as showing mercy. Of course showing that can lead to a new ally, even friend, but it could also lead to a villain just getting another chance to attack.

Shadowplay: Statistically it is too much of a risk to spare an enemy. Especially a dangerous one like Chrysalis. Imprisonment means that the enemy could escape, as recent events have shown. Banishment into another dimension would mean that someone else has to deal with.  Extermination is the only option to truely end the thread.  This is why I killed every member of the cult. In case of a magic user, make sure that he or she does not come back as a lich by detroying the phylactery.

In case you wonder, Shadowplay used to be a genius Pegasus named Wind Whistler, but she got transformed into one of these: derpicdn.net/img/view/2014/3/4…
The Cult who did this wanted to control her, but things wen't wrong and she instead lost her emotions. Now she is a cold and calculating genius in a monstrous and powerful body. Good thing she is one of the good guys.
