The Byzantine empire was finished after the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. But what they won (or avoided) the battle? The Seljuqs would lose their power in twenty years. Seeing this as a sign from God, the Byzantines would spearhead a crusade, at least temporarily uniting East and West against the forces of Islam. New Rome could once again reclaim much of the lost territory of old Rome.
