The Manchu continued their expansion into Asia, butting up against the Mongol Khanates, Mughul India, the Durrani Afghan empire, and the growing powers of Russia and Britain. Over the next century they would spread to cover nearly fifteen million square kilometers. From the core region (red) emperor Qianlong controlled enormous territories (pink) and waged ten wars. By the end of his reign Manchu grip on the empire was beginning to slip. The growing power of Russia chiseled away at the borders of the empire for another century until the monarchy itself would be abolished in 1912 with the creation of the short lived Republic of China.
