The Marathas fought the Mughals over several decades to re-establish Hindu rule of India after nearly six centuries of Muslim rule.

The empire existed in a constant state of warfare to fend off incursions from the Afghans, British, Dutch, and Portugese among other peoples. While the idea of "Indian-ness" would not come about for another century, the Marathas made a great early attempt at trying to take back the subcontinent from foreign invaders.
