Description
1325? - 1405The Lord of War. Timur "the Lame", known in the West as Tamerlane, was the Mongol ruler of Persia and central Asia who sought to outdo his ancestor, the great Chingis Khan, and he very nearly succeeded. His war machine crushed all opposition before it, from the Ottoman Turks, Christian knights, the Afghan Sultan of Delhi, the Rajputs, and even rival Mongol hordes. His wrath so depopulated India that it would take a century for the subcontinent to recover. He died of illness on the way to conquer Ming China, which had just shaken off Mongol rule. In his wake he left 20 million dead and a curse that would reach to modern times. The day Soviet archaeologists opened his tomb, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarosa, the largest invasion in history. A year and a half later, the day that Timur's body was returned to his tomb, the Germans were crushed at Stalingrad and the Soviet armies carved a path of destruction all the way to Berlin. No one has dared disturb History's most vicious conqueror since.
