Surprise gift for Marina Tsunamia here on DA. ('Merry Christmas'?) Its been quite a while since I had time to really did down and fiddle and her character Tacco. He really is just stunning!I remember going to the tide pools when I was little and coming across many different kinds of sea creatures that seemed to be stranded there, waiting for the tide to return. It was the few times I saw live, wild octopus up close. They always looked so desperate clinging to the rocks in the shallow pools. That whats I was working off of at least.
On a side note, sai is great for making an applying textures! I did it probably in a third to a half of the time it normally takes me in PSCS5.

Super surprise! Oh man, thank you so much... I don't get surprises much these days. 
I'm really glad you like the character. He's growing on me to, so I've been doodling him a lot. Seeing him in your style is just marvelous. Wonderful thought when into this... love the tide pools in the background and how he's clinging for shade under that rock. The texture added to his tentacles is beautiful. Wonderful work on it all.

Ahahah! I'm usually so bad at surprises. I actually managed to keep this one super top secret until he was finished. I've been bummed out by our time difference so I've been fiddling around with this for a few weeks off and on in my sketch book. Frustration got the better of me, I must admit and it got brought over for all CG work. I was originally going to crop the edges off for the taller lay out but I could bring myself to do it. I really want to play with his tentacles. I think they may be one of my very best texture jobs.
The tide pools are really great! I would strongly recommend those water shoes for protection/safety if you are doing it in California. (I've admittedly never been to any tide pools outside my home state so I can't really speak for them.)The rocks can be pretty slippery and/or sharp at times but, I think its worth it going out to see all the ocean life that usually swims around out of sight.
