Description This is a rough guide on how to make the dress for Morgiana from Magi: Labyrinth of Magic

More details on making the outfit at my website .

This is a rough guide on how to make Morgiana's dress. I used one of Simplicity's top patterns. It's not a comprehensive tutorial, but it should give you an idea on what to do. I'm assuming you understand about seams and basic sewing. Google and DA have great tutorials on circle skirts and zipper installation.
  • Cut out the front and back of the top.
  • Sew the darts in for the front of the top
  • Sew the top front and top back sides together.
  • Cut the "back" in half. This is where the zipper will go.
  • Cut out a full circle skirt (Click for tutorial ), long enough for it to be either halfway past the thigh, or to the kneecaps. It depends on which artwork you are referencing. I wanted to show off my legs, so I cut it to my thighs.
  • Cut a line through the circle skirt (thick line by "back of dress" label). This is where the zipper will go. This is the same zipper from the back of the top. The zipper must continue from the top to the skirt.
  • Sew the inside of the skirt (pink) to the pink line on the top. Don't forget about seam allowance (I forgot to draw it in the skirt).
  • Install the zipper.
  • Cut out the belt. It's around 2 yards. I can't remember what I used exactly, but it should go around your waist twice

What type of fabric did you use?

A soft white cotton fabric. Any white fabric will do, as long as you line it. I've seen people use some ratty fabric that looks really nice for her too. Sorry for the late reply. You probably made the costume by now xD

i am new to sewing clothing, i hand sew small things like hammocks for my pets and such.. could you go further into detail for me what the take in thing is? and would the sipper show in back, and could this all be done by hand?

The zipper starts from the top and continues down to the skirt (this is necessary to accommodate your hips). The zipper will show in the back, but you can sew it on in a minimizing hand. Yes, it can be done by hand. You can google "hand sew zipper" and there are tutorials.

And the darts to take in? Could you explain that further and how much extra space should a add to the skirt since you forgot to add the lines on there like the top? Im so sorry for all the questions

The amount to take in would depend on how big your boobs are. Are you talking about the zipper on the dress? Probably 1.5 inches to be safe.

I don't understand blue and purple part :-/

The blue are darts. You take it in at the folded lines. This helps accomodate your chest. If your chest is small, you can skip it. The purple part is the zipper.

Hi I was wondering if you had any trouble sewing the zipper in between the top and skirt part?

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

firecloak In reply to JenniferThanks [2014-04-29 00:33:56 +0000 UTC]

    No, I didn't.

The back of the top was cut into two, and then I sewed the skirt (cut at the zipper line--colors purple and black on the diagram) onto the top. After that, I sewed the zipper in.
