Description
My feet twisted in intricate patterns that seemed ingrained in my brain. I could feel my now graduated classmates' eyes on me as I spun around the dance floor. They were surprised at my behavior, I guess. They were shocked to see me out of my shell that protects me from their ridicule, stares, insults, and so on. I don't know why I even came here. I could dance just as well back at my house. I guess it is because I still wanted to find a partner. I was still looking for someone who could match and keep up with my moves. If they could keep up with me then they are perfect for me. These thoughts were all spinning through my mind as I whirled in the candle light. The candles were fresh and new, just like they were at every dance. Over the beat of the music, I heard footsteps approaching. On my next turn around I saw his face. I rolled my eyes and muttered under my breath. It was another jock. He had black hair and green eyes. I think he's in my math class, but he's hardly there so…"Hey Ember!!!" He said as he deliberately walked into my path. "May I have this dance?"
I shrugged. "Only if you can keep up." I mocked as I tossed my waist length black hair back over my shoulder. I smirked as a new song came on. "Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel pounded out of the speakers. My body started to move automatically. Few seconds later I took a look at the jock, I think his name was Slade, and sighed. He was stumbling to keep up. It was time to end this dance. I kicked up my feet, kicked my butt, and spun around once in midair. My laughter bubbled up to the surface as he fell on his butt trying to imitate me.
"Dance over." I said landing in a, undoubtedly painful looking, split. I took another look at the candles seeing how much time I had wasted with that idiot. Good they had hardly burned a centimeter. Slade got up and walked away muttering something about expectations and a roof.
As the song ended, I heard the faintest chuckle and a guy made his way over to me. I didn't recognize him from any of my classes. I wouldn't call him a jock, nerd, geek, or any other label. He seemed to fit in one all his own. He had the looks of a jock, but obviously didn't play sports because all the jocks I know did not mock or laugh at others. He was way too hot to be a nerd or a geek.
He walked up to me and held out his hand. I took it. "May I have this dance Miss…?" he asked pulling me up. Now that he was out of the shadows I could see that he had dark brown hair and it shadowed his sea green eyes.
I smiled. "Spitfire, but please no last names. Call me Ember." I used his hand to pull me up. "Sure… Mr. …?" I asked. He smiled.
"Wave Stormrider at your service." He said. Just then, as if on a timer, "Forever" by Chris Brown started to play. I kept a hold on his hand as we started to move. Unlike the other guys I'd danced with, I found that once our eyes locked, they were unable to look any where else. His eyes were pools of the very essence of a restless sea, continually shifting colors with the lighting. I smirked mentally at the irony of it. My eyes were constantly being compared to as glowing embers, they could be anywhere from dark brown to an almost eerie copper orange depending on the light and my mood, hence my name. My skirt, black like my hair, swirled around my feet. My black tank top's rhinestones glittered like stars in the candle light. I nearly gasped as my feet left the ground as he picked me up by my waist and threw me into a triple spin. My feet must have been at most three feet off of the floor. He caught me when my feet were less than a six inches off of the ground. My subconscious noticed that the song had changed and shifted my moves to match the new tempo. His must have too because we shifted tempos still perfectly in time with one another's moves. This must have continued on for a while because when I next caught a glance of the candles, they were halfway burnt. We suddenly slowed when after several fast paced songs, a slow song came on. Out of the corner of my eye I could see everyone who did not have a dance partner leaving for the door. This was the couples-only-time of the dance, it would be the first time I had actually stuck around for it too. Wave pulled me close. I recognized the song that was playing after a few seconds. It was "Claire De Lune" by Debussy. I could feel his heart beating in flawless harmony with mine. The candle light dimmed even more and we pressed ourselves tighter together, if that was even possible. We revolved together our eyes never wavering from one another's. This continued for some time as the candle light grew dimmer bit by bit. The final note of the song echoed through the gymnasium growing fainter as our heads leaned closer to one another. As the note finally disappeared, our lips met. It started out with a passion a cold as the sea but grew slowly and steadily to the temperature of a forest fire. We broke apart only due to lack of oxygen. I smiled. As far as I was concerned, my first real kiss, I didn't count the ones where the jocks kissed me and ended up with a black eye, couldn't be any more perfect. I didn't think, I didn't need to; I knew he was the only one for me.
"Want go to my car or yours?" he whispered huskily. I leaned towards him and smiled
"Surprise me." I said. He grabbed my hand and we headed out the double doors of the gym. He led me over to an old, battered, black Ford Explorer. He opened the passenger door for me and gestured to me. I shook my head.
"No. I want to grab my stuff and drop my car of at my house." I said.
"I'll follow you." He said. I dashed a few parking spots to my own battered vehicle, a Cadillac Escapade. One click from the automatic key in my hand and I opened the driver's side door and climbed in. once in, I shoved the key into the ignition and buckled my seatbelt. Turning the key, I listened as the engine came noisily to life. I quickly pulled out of the parking lot. I couldn't help but smile. I could grab my bags and run away with Wave and my 'parents' wouldn't even notice. Well, they would when the dishes started piling up and the house became a mess. Pulling in to my driveway I dashed up the steps and opened the door. Reaching in, I grabbed my bags that had been waiting by the door. After all, I had been planning to leave as soon as possible by tomorrow. I would have to come and pick my car up later. I ran out the door leaving that place of unpleasant memories behind.
I dashed over to Wave's car, slung my bags in, and hopped in after them. I closed the passenger door quietly so as not to wake the house's sleeping inhabitants. I glanced over at the only man I have ever loved and he looked back at me with love in his sea green eyes. Wave leaned towards me and I met his lips in a kiss. Pulling away, all too soon in my opinion, he shifted the car into gear. We pulled out of the drive and into the deserted city street. Street lights lit our way into the darkness like the candles from the dance, only these never went out. He reached over and grabbed my hand. We drove off into the night, away from our pasts, and towards our future.
