Description
Hey guys, Fireemblemspider here. And welcome to another addition of my top 10. The place where I take the top ten of well... anything really and place it here for you to see.
Disney… What can be said about Disney that hasn’t been said before? It was the company that gave us such classics as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, the list goes on and on. With hundreds films under their name, they have been a blockbuster powerhouse, for the young and the young at heart.
And it’s not just Disney films that have been successful. There have been Disney T.V shows as well that have been just as successful as their blockbuster counterparts. Disney has won the worlds love for many years and has continued to do so, by capturing the audience’s imagination and wonder. They use wonder settings, good storytelling and spectacular characters to make us believe that our dreams can come true, which is the theme of most Disney movies.
Despite me being older, I still have not lost my love for Disney in their work has not diminished. (Although to be fair I do question what they are doing to Spider-Man in his T.V series). Walt Disney was all about dreams and our hopes to one day achieve them. With that thought in mind, he created amazing characters to help focus on that. Many others would create exceedingly good characters even after his passing.
But what are my favorite characters? Who are my favorite characters that Disney has to offer? And there are a ton of great and wonderful characters that I won’t be mentioning on this list. And who can possibly blame me? Everyone has a group of Disney characters they can relate to. And with so many options, there is no way that I will be able to have the same favorites as someone else. So with that said, this is my top 10 favorite Disney characters. Also, I am not limiting myself just to the movies; I will be taking a look an animated T.V series and shorts. Also, I will not be using Marvel characters or Star Wars for this list. Get over it. Let’s get started.
Number 10: Chip and Dale
The comedic duo of two chipmunks living their lives when something comes along to bring discord has always had a special place in my heart. Chip, the one with the black nose, has been the more intelligent and cunning one. Dale, on the other hand, is usually depicted as complete idiot, usually getting into dangerous situations, only to be rescued by Chip.
While initially enemies of Pluto, Mickey’s dog, they eventually became a reoccurring enemy of Donald Duck. They would usually be enjoying themselves and their environment and Donald would come along to either, unwittingly ruin or destroy their home or pulling a prank on them and the chipmunks are eager to even the score.
The two became much more defined characters in the show Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers. Chip is a no-nonsense, intelligent hero of the group, while Dale is usually the lazy, dimwitted one who always seems to get into trouble, though he does prove himself on several occasions.
Chip and Dale make a good comedic duo and have been my favorite for years. They will probably continue to be, even for years to come.
Number 9: Ferb (From Phineas and Ferb)
The British, silent, genius stepbrother of Phineas. From the first moment I started watching this show, this character, without saying a word, became my favorite characters. He is highly intelligent, considerate of others and an incredibly daring hero. He doesn’t need to say anything, allowing his actions to speak for him. He is usually the tool man of the group, using what tools necessary to build whatever device Phineas and Ferb plan to build that day. And yes, he is a little young to be using power tools.
While he does usually say only one line per episode, it is usually priceless. He has some of the funniest lines in the show and every time he speaks he always makes me laugh.
Ferb being part of a blended family is a kids program is pretty interesting. And unlike most stepchildren, Ferb actually enjoys being with his stepsiblings Candace and Phineas. While it is still unknown about Ferb’s history with his real mother, the fact that he gets along well with his stepsiblings, his father and his stepmother shows that, even in a blended family, you can be a loving, strong family.
And it shows. He’s never malicious towards his sister, despite him and his brother driving her insane with their antics. He just thinks of what they are doing as using their talents and allowing others, including their sister, to enjoy and partake in what they are able to accomplish, stating that everything they do they do for fun. (“And for the ladies.”)
Ferb seems to also have the ability to speak several languages. And not just human either. He speak in several animal languages and even alien. … Weird…
A very popular character from the Phineas and Ferb series, this character is the boy who can build anything and needs to say nothing.
Number 8: Tigger (From Winnie the Pooh)
T-I-double guh- Er. That spells the character originally based off one of Christopher Robin Milne’s stuff animals, Tigger has been adapted into Disney’s world as one of its most beloved characters.
The bouncing-loving orange character first appeared in Winnie the Pooh’s Blustery day. After hearing a strange sound outside his house, Pooh goes to investigate, only to discover Tigger. Tigger introduces himself and the two start a friendship as he later meets the other characters in the Hundred Acre Woods.
Tigger is a fun-loving, charismatic, energetic character, who loves to bounce around and have fun. … I swear there is another character I like that does that… I just can’t put my finger on it…
However, Tigger is also very prideful, thinks highly of himself and can be pretty arrogant. He can be mischievous, usually bringing trouble to him and his friends. After all, causing trouble is what Tigger’s do best. He’s also… not the brightest character. He usually jumps into trouble without thinking about the consequences.
While the character does mean well and usually only pulls pranks in good spirit, they sometimes do backfire and result in disaster. Despite this, he always bounces back up and tries again. This is probably what I admire most about the character. No matter how he screws up, he always maintains a positive attitude and is always full of energy, not letting things get him down. Most thing anyway.
Tigger made my childhood a little brighter with his bright personality, positive attitude and his never give up nature. Because Tiggers are wonderful thing. And he is the only one.
Number 7: Donald Duck
Who’s got the sweetest disposition? Donald Duck of course. Donald Duck is one of Disney’s highlight characters. If you don’t know who this guy is, you need to get out more.
Donald Duck was created as Mickey Mouse’s opposite. While Mickey always kept his cool and was the ideal role model for kids, Donald was temperamental, constantly losing his temper when things didn’t go his way or bad things happened to him.
Donald also has a bit of a bully side to him as he enjoys playing pranks on his nephews, Chip and Dale, and his friends. This makes him come off as a jerk and usually results in his victims wanting payback. And when Donald is on the receiving end, he is all about getting back at them, which usually not only fails, but usually makes him angrier. But Donald is never malicious with his pranks and when he realizes he’s gone too far, he will go out of his way to make up for it. Sometimes being duped into believing something that isn’t true.
Donald also enjoys bragging and showing off, usually to the dismay of others. This along with his temper can usually get him into situations that are pretty funny.
While Mickey Mouse was the character every kid wanted to be, popular, good looking, the guy with everything, Donald was usually the character every kid was. Temperamental, a bit of a prankster, and arrogant but still had a good heart and a good moral set. These traits allowed me to relate to Donald much easier than Mickey. Because of that, it was easier for me to laugh when Donald lost his temper because I could see myself in his shoes… or flippers.
For all his bad luck, he always makes me laugh and make me relate to his temper. And no one is stuck with all the bad luck like Donald Duck.
Number 6: David Xanatos (From Gargoyles)
Voiced by Jonathan Franks and the one of the main antagonists for one of my favorite shows of all time, David Xanatos is the CEO of Xanatos Enterprises.
A cunning business man and an even more brilliant mastermind, he was the man who freed the gargoyles from their stone slumber. He had hoped to use them in his schemes, by winning their trust. However, with the help of Elisa Maza, Goliath and the gargoyles are able to expose his schemes.
However, after being released from prison, Xanatos would become a primary adversary to the Gargoyles, being the brain that challenged Goliath’s brawn. (Isn’t weird that David is the bad guy in this story and Goliath is the good guy? Greg Weisman, you’re a genius!)
While he does suffer defeat by the Gargoyles hands, he often doesn’t dwell on it, choosing to take the little victories that he did achieve rather than having no victories at all. He takes his failures well and is able to adapt when his plans go array.
He is skilled in judo and karate, has a multi-billion dollar company with vast scientific and technological resources and a robotic suit that he uses in his scheming. He is also responsible for creating the majority of the Gargoyles foes, such as the Pack and the Xanatos android, Coyote. With Demona’s help, Xanatos was even able to create Coldstone, a Frankenstein’s monster’s version of the gargoyles.
He also, inadvertently, caused his wife, Fox, to transform into a werewolf with an artifact called the Eye of Odin, which he gave to her as a wedding gift. This caused one of the most dramatic and heartfelt moments in Xanatos’s story. Xanatos realizes that, despite his best efforts, he cannot find a way to cure Fox on his own. He goes to Goliath, his most hated enemy, and practically begs him to help him. Goliath sees this as one of Xanatos’s schemes and refuses.
Eventually, Xanatos is able to convince Goliath that Fox is in danger of losing her life and Goliath agrees to help him. After Fox is saved, Xanatos informs Goliath that the gargoyle now knows his only weakness. Goliath replies that only Xanatos would “regard love as a weakness.”
This was one of the best scene of villain I had seen at the time. This story was different from any other villain I had seen. Usually, villains were just evil dudes who wanted to take over the world. This show and this character was the first villain where I realized that villains are as deep and as complex as our heroes. This show was the show that inspired me to become a storyteller and made my idol, Greg Weisman. While other shows did have a similar effect on me, none of them prepared me more for the future of storytelling than Gargoyles and its greatest villain, David Xanatos.
Number 5: Aladdin
The street rat of Agrabah has won his place as one of Disney’s finest heroes. While he did start out on the streets as a common thief, he would eventually save his friends, his wife and the world on several occasions.
He would steal what he needed to survive, but was never selfish. He would always give to those poorer than him and had no way of obtaining it for themselves.
While he is a thief, he is honest, kind and spirits a positive personality. This allows many of the citizens of Agrabah, despite his criminal record, to retain a friendship with him. He is resourceful and is able to use his wit against his opponents, who are usually much bigger and much stronger than him. His selfless nature and his willingness to protect others the way he was never protected is what introduces him to Jasmine, though he didn’t know it was her at the time.
He is also a master of manipulation, using his wit to subdue his opponent, without throwing a single punch. He has been shown in the Aladdin: Animated Series and the movies, that he is able to outwit them or exploiting their weaknesses, despite them being stronger and sometimes even smarter than he is. Heck, he even beats Hercules in his own animated series, by using his intellect.
Though Aladdin is not without his flaws, he often can overestimate his abilities and often lies about important subjects to his friends, mostly out of fear of being rejected.
Despite this, Aladdin is one of my favorite Disney heroes for his cunning and wit, using them to defeat opponents that are more than he should be able to handle. Sort of like another hero I like… but who?... Who?
Number 4: Darkwing Duck
He is the terror that flaps in the night. The Defender of St. Canard was once an ordinary duck named Drake Mallard. Drake sees his future self, not knowing it’s him, he becomes a hero after rescuing Elmo Sputterspark (who would later become Megavolt, his arch-nemesis)
Despite this, Drake makes it his mission to protect St. Canard from evil and villains. Although he has no superpowers, he has an array of gadgets, weapons, and vehicles to deal with the criminals. He also is fluent in martial arts and deception. With his sidekick, Launchpad and his daughter, Gosalyn, Darkwing battles super villains, spies and terrorists. Like Aladdin, Darkwing often uses his mind and wit to defeat his opponents. One such event saw Darkwing gain super strength, but finds that his super strength is no match for his clever mind.
While he is incredibly heroic and selfless, he is also incredibly arrogant and self-absorbed. He is sometimes bumbling idiot and can be completely clumsy. He can be incompetent in his desire for fame and glory that comes with being a hero. But he does realize when he has been vain and can overcome his own ego, in order to save the day. He is a loving father, a good friend and is a great hero.
This makes Darkwing Duck unique, as very few heroes are actually fathers. This hero has to balance being a father to his adoptive daughter and being a hero that defends his city. Making him a fan favorite and one of my favorites as well.
Number 3: Judge Claude Frollo (From Hunchback of Notre Dame)
On multiple occasions, Frollo has been named one of Disney’s greatest villains. And frankly, I agree. This man is the definition of a deadly villain. In the story, he seeks a pure world by ridding the world of gypsies, believing their feats to be witchcraft. In his corrupted eyes, this is unholy and satanic, which he seeks to cleanse.
Heck, the very first scene of the movie is him killing a woman and threatening to drown her child in a well. It hasn’t even been five minutes and already he’s murdered someone.
He is very different from the original adaptation. The original Frollo from the novel was much kinder and more compassionate, which is not at all what we get in this version.
He teaches Quasimodo that the world is cruel and that he is the only pure being in it. He treats Quasimodo cruelly and little regard for his well-being. In fact the only reason he didn’t kill the child, though not for lack of trying, is that he feared his soul would be damned to hell for this crime. Because the slaughter of innocent people is not at all going backfire on you.
This is probably the thing I like the most about Frollo, or at the very least makes me hate him even more, everything he does, he thinks is justified in the eyes of God. He believes that every life he takes, every home he destroys is completely justified in his holy war.
During the course of the story, he begins to lust for Esmeralda. This obsession turns drives him into a murderous frenzy.
Unlike most Disney villains, he has no magical powers, he has no super abilities, and he has no secret talents. He’s just a sick human being. Frollo thinks little of others and take a sinister pleasure in watching others suffer. He’s a genocidal, sadistic, racist, vicious maniac. A disgraceful human being. And a really good villain. (Oh, and Hellfire… Great song.)
Number 2: Belle (From Beauty and the Beast)
Going back to the realm of good people here, Belle is by far my favorite Disney princess. And why not? She is incredibly intelligent, cunning, kind and strong. Belle is introduced to us as a very intelligent character in a town where a person, who is beautiful, but seeks more than the simple life she finds herself in. This is why she is a heavy reader of literature, especially books that contain adventure and fantasy.
Her vocabulary is vast compare to most other people in the town and she is also the most open minded. The latter trait is the one I probably admire the most about her. The ability to look beyond a person’s appearance and see them for who they are is a special talent that few people possess. This is how she is able to look past Gaston’s good looks and muscular and see him for the “boorish, brainless” person that he really is.
At the same time, Belle is able to see the Beast for who he truly is, though it takes a little longer, but is able to give him and chance to change and show her who he really is.
She is very confident and doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do, unless she trusts and respects them, like her father and eventually the Beast because they are able to treat her as an equal and not her superior. A trait that Gaston lacks, which is why she refuses to interact with or compromise with Gaston. Despite this, she is kind and understand, treating others with respect unless she is not treated to such respect. She doesn’t think of herself as beautiful, but doesn’t care about appearances, seeing the beauty inside.
She goes on through the movie as someone who is simply searching more than her monotonous life gives her. She dreams of adventuring, of discovering new worlds. A trait I also share, which is why I read and write fiction, it allows me to explore new worlds and adventure through danger and perils. However, she changes through the story as well, discovering that sometimes the simple things can bring us happiness as well. Such as, find the man (or woman in my case) that we can spend our lives with and be happy.
With this trait, I relate to Belle better than I would Ariel or Jasmine. Since Ariel and Jasmine are both princesses, they have a lot of what they already want. I admit that Jasmine is being forced to marry against her will, but she is still a high authority figure. Belle wasn’t born a princess. By all rights, she is a commoner. It isn’t until her marriage to the Beast that she becomes princess.
Belle is everything that I would look for in a significant other. She’s intelligent, but never snotty about it. She’s kind, but she knows how to stand up for herself. She’s a dreamer, but understands the difference between reality and dreams. She’s beautiful, but never vain. And she doesn’t care what people think about her, only wanting to do what she loves and what she believes is right.
And yes… if you haven’t figured it out by now, I have a bit of a crush on Belle. Don’t tell me you all haven’t once admired a fictional female (or male for some of you) character.
Belle is one of the best Disney princesses for a reason and my favorite Disney female character of all time.
Number 1: Goofy
This may come as a shock to a lot of you, since there are so many great characters on this list and Disney all around, but I have my reasons for liking Goofy above all others. Because he makes me laugh. That’s it… Goofy has a simple reason of why I like him, but it is very important to me.
A long time ago, I was not always a happy person in my life. There were very few things that could make me smile, that is until my first Goofy cartoon. Goof Troop and Goofy made me laugh. He was a character I looked up to, because he would always make me laugh due to his clumsy nature and his bumbling ways. Despite his goofiness and often childish behavior, he always has a smile on his face, he gets up and he tries again.
He is always willing to help others and is always positive about the things around him, even if they don’t go according to plan. He is the one you can count on to do the things you need him to do. As time went by the relationship with Mickey, Donald and Goofy, or the rivalry that developed to Donald and Goofy, mirrored that of my younger siblings. My siblings would always argue and bicker, while I, like Goofy, would be on the sidelines either not taking sides or trying to make peace.
Goofy is also the only father of the main Disney character, where the other characters are uncles or father-like figures, Goofy is the only one to have a biological son. And his parenting skills remind me of my father. He is only strict when he needs to be and is very careful not to damage the relationship with his son, usually putting his son’s needs before his own.
He is also the star of many “How-to” cartoon. These cartoons often placed Goofy into situations where he is learning something new. And no matter how many times he fails, he always pulls himself up and tries again. This is a trait I’ve come to admire about Goofy. He is clumsy and dim-witted, but that’s never stopped him from being a good person and giving it his all.
All this and more is why Goofy is my favorite Disney character.
So, that’s my top 10 Disney characters. Agree? Disagree? Leave your top 10 in the comments below. As for me, I’m heading to bed. Have a great night. I know I will.

What a great analysis! You did all the characters justice! The only thing I would disagree with is that Goofy is the only "father" of the trio. Yes, Goofy is the only one to have a biological son, but Donald literally adopted his three nephews in both the comics and the cartoons. "The New Spirit" (1942) shows Donald fill out his tax form and put down the triplets as his dependents with their relationship to him being "adopted." The difference between Goofy and Donald in their parental methods though is the difference in age between Donald and Goofy. Donald was originally much younger than even Mickey as shown in the "Orphans' Benefit" (1934) and how Donald was much smaller and younger and even in the early Taliaferro comics which show Clarabelle and even Minnie scold Donald or give him treats. So when Donald parents his nephews, he usually loses his temper or stoops to their level because he's still quite a child himself. Goofy on the other hand, is much older, more mature and has much more patience. Whew! I hope that helped explain it. But yeah...Donald is my favorite but I understand why you chose Goofy! He's awesome, too!

Yeah! No problem! Sadly, many people don't know that Donald literally adopted his nephews. But at least, you know about it now! No problem! Donald and Goofy definitely both deserve to be on your list!

Tigger as Rainbow Dash? Never thought about it before but... I guess you're right. They do have a lot of common. Boastful and a bit arrogant, but always there for their friends. I love it!
I like the list you've got. All great Disney Characters. There are just so many to choose from its hard to do a Top 10.
