Description Submission for Tortal Comics and Tamora Peirce's "The Provost's Dog" Series

Character - Beka Cooper (copywrite to Tamora Pierce)

((x indicates where is to be colored black))

The reason that i gave her longer bangs than what is seen on the cover...is because she often (according to the books) "hides" her eyes behind her bangs...you cant do that with bangs that frame your face.

I agree with a lot of the other comments others have left. A little more length to the braid, plus the spike, would be great for her, and I think that making her little taller and a little... fuller-figured? would make her look more grown up.

But this is a great start!! You really did a great job!!

I probably should have specified ^.^; this is kind of based off of her in "Terrier"...she's not as full figured because of her description of herself saying that she does have nice sized breasts, but just enough that you can barely see it from her uniform (something i'm going to emphasize in my redo...however, Taller I can see...she is in the upper 5' and i have her drawn around 5'3" at most...

Sounds like you have a good plan for the next version. This is definitely a good start-- I can't wait to see more.

I like it I would do a bit longer hair, and add in the spikes. Also, I always imagined her a little taller and leaner. She looks a bit young n_n But, all in all, it captures her character nicely.

I agree she looks a bit young. I was sort of forgetting that she wasn't one of the characters we followed from when they were ten. We will, however, need some ref sheets for a young Beka for flashbacks of her childhood in the slums and then in the Lord Provost's house.

This looks really amazing! I love that you used the template. Also, I think I'd like to see her braid go down to the middle of her back... do you think you could also try designing her hair spike thing?

But again... this is really awesome! Great work!!

The spike thing should be fine, and i can certainly add more length to the braid! I'm working on my Erskin design right now so he and beka should be finished by today

I agree with the comments about her heels, and the length of her hair. Also, I think her belt should be at her hips, because she carries her weapons and money pouch etc on it, and it would be quite uncomfortable to have all that bulk up right beneath her bust. I know that fashion now says that we should accentuate the smallest part of our figures and all that, but clothing back in medieval times was probably not as tailored, and definitely didn't follow the same conventions we do now. Finally, she mentions several times wearing loose clothing in order to hide her concealed knives.

Other than that, I really like the design. The style of the cut looks good.

Right Should i draw her money pouch and baton on the belt? What do you think?

Definitely the baton!

Ah Beka's black on black is going to be fun for the artists My main critique would be that I don't think she should have heels on her boots. Riding boots would have a heel like that to prevent the boot slipping out of the stirrup and a fairly stiff sole, but otherwise medieval boots didn't have raised heels. Even by today's standards I would think someone who had to spend all their day on their feet walking and running and climbing if need be would not wear boots with heels, though people with actual experience wearing heels might think otherwise. For more info on heels and medieval shoes in general see [link] and [link] .

Only thing I would change would be the length of her hair. It seems to be her one vanity (and I think she said it at least once), and it is quite long. That's one of the reasons she braids a spiked leather strip into her hair, because of the length.

Very true...i had been arguing with myself about the length...thats why i wanted to draw at least one with her hair down.

I like the shot with the hair down. I think that's also a look that Rosto would quite enjoy on her, if for no other reason than it's rare. I don't really know anything about braiding hair, but is a braid generally much shorter than loose hair?

Fireflowermaiden In reply to gwagener [2011-01-18 05:00:54 +0000 UTC]

Its about an inch shorter or so...depending on how loose the braid is. A tight braid can pull in about an inch or an inch and a half. A loose braid maybe a half an inch.

Right, so not that significant as far as the art goes.
