I have a query about Tensa Zangetsu though: why didn't Zangetsu transform into such a being when he used Bankai against Ichigo in the Zanpakuto arc (or whatever it was called)? just sayin'.

I would assume it's because it is a filler arc and Kubo hadn't drawn Tensa Zangetsu at the time. (If he did, they probably didn't show it so it wouldn't give away a spoiler.)
That or the animators that created that arc didn't know what they were doing. XD

yeah, 'because the writers hadn't thought of it yet' was the explanation I assumed as well XD just found it amusing. and I only remembered about it because I happened to watch the fight on youtube recently... yeah, I was pretty bored.
