Description
I felt flaggy.A semy-plausible take on the reasoning behind the flag of Code Geass' Holy Britannian empire. Primary difference in this are the different Irish flag (as opposed to St. Patrick's Flag, a 17th century invention) incorporating St. George's Cross, the Celtic Cross and the shield of arms and of course the addition of the North American colonies with a flag alluding to the richness of the land in green and gold. Also, there is an explicit reference to France's mediaeval flag of Azure, a Cross Argent (used during the Hundred Years' War and remembered in the flag of Quebec).
Code Geass is not mine.

TTL's name for the Anglo-British colonies in the New World, i.e. essentially the Caribbean, Rupert's Land, Canada and the *Thirteen Colonies. In the aftermath of the crushed colonial rebellion of 1776-1781 and the relocation of the Crown-in-Parliament to New Haven and Boston in 1805, the Thirteen Colonies and Quebec, now duchies, were remodelled into the Kingdom of New Britain.

When I first saw the shield upon the flag when I was still watching the series, it reminded me a lot of the Amestrian flag, with the (I believe) Argent Rampant Chimera upon Vert background. It's mostly due to the unusual tail and lion's head really, still this is a lovely explanation!

No, though I don't doubt that someone has made a nation called Amestria, it's the main country of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. By the way, Pyrrium is a new nation on Nationstates, but of course my ideas are driving the economy into the toilet lol

Hehe, this is the best explanation of the Empire's flag I've seen yet.
Any reason as to why the coat of arms changed to the lion and serpent?

Thank you
I assume that they are a variation on the Duke of Britannia's arms, upon accession augmented with the interpretation that the lion is for the sovereign and for strength and the serpent for change and progress.

Well great job. You definitely made me look at the Brittanic flag in a whole new, more straightforward, light.

The course of the flag's evolution does look very fitting and logical...though what would a flag for a Republican Britannia look like?

Presumably either St. Joseph's Cross (Vert a cross Or) or the flag of the realm without the crown and lion in the arms ... Thank you

Any time!
Though I'd imagine the Republicans trying to push for a somewhat distorted version of the OTL US flag.

The US were of little importance ITTL. Even so, this Britannia would be thoroughly different.

She was fairly unpopular for some time. I rather meant the vast influx of British nobility and the relocation of political power to the former colonies complete with centralisation.

That could happen...and a possible exodus of monarchists to Great Britain, hoping to remold the UK into a "restored Britannia."

Well, even then it's a monarchy in all but name. The Lord Protector is almost as powerful as the Empress before him, but he is elected, and the nobility retained. Except for the replacement of the person of the sovereign, everything stays the same. The Lord Protector even continues to use a derivation of the Imperial Arms (Azure a Cross Gules fimbriated Argent fimbriated Or, thereupon an escutcheon Sable a Serpent Vert langued Gules a bordure Or, crowned by a closed mural crown, mantling Or and Ermine, supporters Lion imperially crowned and Dragon, motto All Hail Britannia).

I suppose that would make sense. Still, what would the "British" back in the Home Isles think of Britannia? Would they consider some form of union?

Hm, let me think about it ... oh! Never. Never ever. Not only is the UK a part of the UFN, it is also deeply sceptical of Britannia. Their relations normalised only after the Fall of the North in 2039 (or something), when Empress Nunnally sought exile in Britain and HIH The Prince of Wales and Newfoundland renounced her titles of Queen of Great Britain and of Ireland (though not of France) in her name in order to get asylum in Brympton d'Evercy.
